1. 7amleh: Palestinian Digital Rights Coalition Calls on Meta to Stop
Dehumanizing Palestinians and Silencing Their Voices

A collective of Palestinian human rights and civil society
organizations are demanding that Meta stop the dehumanization and
silencing of Palestinians that is taking place on their platforms.
They want Meta to take immediate and decisive action to rectify the
deep-rooted bias that continues to plague its platforms as a result of
AI-driven dehumanization and disproportionate moderation of
Palestinian content.

4. Kick-Off Event for NEW Report on Social Media Accountability in the
2022 Philippine Election

On November 21 join the kick-off virtual event for a new Digital Reach
report examining social media accountability in the 2022 Philippine
Election - marked for being one of the unique elections in the past
three decades, and witnessing the resurgence of the Marcos family to
the highest office thirty years after they fled the country following
the civilian-led People Power Revolution. Join the event to learn key
findings, and hear from guest experts specializing in information
disorders, fact-checking initiatives, and social media accountability.

5. New Book on Internet Infrastructure & Power in Tech

The new book, “Eaten by the Internet”, edited by Corinne Cath, makes
internet infrastructure visible as a force of political power, which
is transforming the social world, from the bottom up. It features
contributions by a global set of researchers, activists, and techies.
You can get a free PDF or order the book from the publisher's website:

6. North Korea Information Technology Incubator Call

NetFreedom Pioneers is seeking application for their North Korea
Information Technology Incubator. The goal is to lower the entry

6. Global/UK: Artificial Intelligence Summit Must Not Ignore Severe
Rights Harms of Fraud-Detection Tech

Experts, like those at Amnesty’s Algorithmic Accountability Lab, are
sharing concerns ahead of

UK’s AI Safety Summit, stating that the Summit must not ignore the
severe rights harms of fraud-detection technology. They state that the
Summit’s agenda clearly favours interest of the tech industry. This is
concerning as the use of such tends to act against marginalized
groups.

1. FAQ: Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline & Apple Threat Notifications

This FAQ addresses what Access Now knows about ongoing Apple threat
notifications sent to people who may have been targeted by
state-sponsored attacks aiming to remotely compromise their devices.
These attacks include the use of spyware technology. The FAQ also
explains Access Now’s relationship to these notifications.

3. Platform Researcher Access Tools & The Brussels Effect

Europe is traditionally ahead of the US on policies regarding consumer
protection, which often leads to a “Brussels Effect,” or a phenomenon
in which companies make changes to comply with EU law and extend those
changes to consumers around the world. To track the impact of Europe’s
policy on non-European internet research, the team at the Institute
for Data, Democracy, and Politics at George Washington University is
launching a Platform Researcher Access Tools & The Brussels Effect
Tracker

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###

1. Intensified Israeli Surveillance Has Put the West Bank on Lockdown

The West Bank was Israel’s surveillance laboratory. Since the
Israel-Hamas war began, Palestinian residents have been locked in for
days at a time.

2. US Counterterror Director Used Hamas Attack to Justify Mass
Surveillance Program Renewal

The U.S. intelligence community is facing calls to reform the spying
tool known as 702, which is set to expire at the end of the year.
During a Senate briefing last week, a federal counterterrorism
official cited the October 7 Hamas attack while urging Congress to
reauthorize a sprawling and controversial surveillance program
repeatedly used to spy on U.S. citizens on U.S. soil.

3. Meta Pressed to Compensate War Victims Amid Claims Facebook
Inflamed Tigray Conflict

Meta is facing growing calls to set up a restitution fund for victims
of the Tigray war, which Facebook is alleged to have fueled leading to
over 600,000 deaths and the displacement of millions others across
Ethiopia.

https://guce.techcrunch.com/copyConsent?sessionId=3_cc-session_e34f88e3-d44b-45e7-89fc-87c29cbe5eb5&lang=en-US

Amnesty International urged Meta to set up a fund that will also
benefit other victims of conflict around the world, amidst heightened
fears that the social site’s presence in “high-risk and
conflict-affected areas” could “fuel advocacy of hatred and incite
violence against ethnic and religious minorities” in new regions.
Amnesty International report outlines how “Meta contributed to human
rights abuses in Ethiopia.” Read the full report from Amnesty
International here:

4. Libya: Escalation of Internet Shutdowns and Erosion of Digital Freedom

Libyan authorities have recently intensified their efforts to control
the information flow in the country, through a series of internet and
communication shutdowns. These blackouts are used to launch arrest
operations against activists in all secrecy. The erosion of digital
freedom in Libya is a serious source of concern as it violates the
rights of the population and is used by armed forces to commit human
rights abuses.

5. This Month, The EU Parliament Can Take Action To Stop The Attack On
Encryption

A key European parliamentary committee has taken an important step to
defend user privacy, including end-to-end encryption. The Committee on
Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) has politically
agreed on much-needed amendments to a proposed regulation that, in its
original form, would allow for mass-scanning of people’s phones and
computers.

6. International NGO to Establish Platform to Track Digital Rights Violation

Avocats Sans Frontieres (ASF) France said it would develop a platform,
through its e-rights project, where incidences of digital rights
violation can be reported and tracked in order to have verifiable
statistics in Nigeria.

7. Can Congress Save MrBeast and Tom Hanks from AI Deepfakes?

The dangers to both movie stars and ordinary people are growing as
AI-fueled deepfake technology becomes more readily available, experts
say.
