### Team CommUNITY (TCU) ###

1. NEW Digital Rights Regional Briefs of May are Out!!

Every month, our Community Leads from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and
MENA, bring critical information about digital justice issues around
the globe, current opportunities for digital rights defenders,
community news, regional developments, and more! For May, learn about
the new bill in Colombia which will protect the labor rights of
delivery workers, the content moderators unionizing in Africa, Asian
platform workers strategizing during May Day, and how the Internet is
shrinking as a public sphere in Tunisia.

increase the event cap and will allow us to ensure we have more equal
participation reflecting the diversity of the digital rights
community.

3. Help Funders Better inform HRD Funding by Filling out Survey
Commissioned by OSF and Pivot Brigade

If you have a few minutes, consider filling out a survey, commissioned
by Open Society and Pivot Brigade, to better assist donors in
providing effective support to human rights defenders and civil
liberties activists. The survey covers a broad range of security and
risk-related issues that impact mission-critical areas of operations.
This is a good way to signal the growing importance of security in our
organizations and networks! It will only take 15-20 minutes to finish.

5. Reports from Our Community

a) Byte Bullies: Understanding Violence Against Women in Politics in
Kenya Election

Pollicy conducted a comprehensive study that involved tracking and
analyzing the online activities of 268 women and men candidates on
Twitter and Facebook. The research is focused in the 2022 Kenya
general elections specifically, during the campaign and election
period to understand these malignant practices. From the physical
world to the digital realm, gender-based discrimination persists and
thrives through malignant online practices. Kenya is no exception, as
online harassment targets both prominent women and everyday users.

https://vawpke.pollicy.org

b) Jordan: How are Users Affected by the TikTok Van?

Social media platforms and other communication services have been
banned in Jordan on several occasions. The latest ban targeted TikTok
after truck drivers in Maan organized protests and strikes over rising
fuel prices. Four months ago, 4.43 million users in Jordan lost access
to TikTok after the Public Security Directorate imposed a “temporary
suspension.” Jordan is the first Arab country to ban TikTok
completely. Check the article on the link below:

https://smex.org/jordan-how-are-users-affected-by-the-tiktok-ban/

c) Unfreedom Monitor Report: Hungary

The Unfreedom Monitor is a Global Voices Advox research initiative
examining the growing phenomenon of networked or digital
authoritarianism. This extract is of the executive summary of the
report on Hungary, from the series of reports to come out of the
research under the Unfreedom Monitor. Read the full report in the link
below:

https://advox.globalvoices.org/2023/05/29/unfreedom-monitor-report-hungary/

d) Analysis of the Israeli Inciteful speech against the Village of
"Huwara" on Twitter

7amleh issued an analytical report outlining the volume, nature, and
patterns of inflammatory and violent speech in Hebrew directed at the
village of Huwara on Twitter between the beginning of the year and the
end of March. This contributed to the implementation of a number of
attacks by settlers on the villagers and their properties and causing
harm to them, which reached its climax on the night of the
twenty-seventh of February. Check the report on the link below:

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###

1. Amnesty Tech: Rohingya Reparations and Human Rights Must top Meta
Shareholders Agenda

Ahead of Meta’s Annual Shareholder Meeting on Wednesday (31 May 2023),
Pat de Brún, Head of Big Tech Accountability and Deputy Director of
Amnesty Tech, said: “It is way beyond time that Meta fulfilled its
responsibilities and provided an effective remedy to the Rohingya
people of Myanmar. It is reprehensible that Meta still refuses to
repair the harms it contributed to despite the overwhelming evidence
that the company played a key role in 2017’s ethnic cleansing.

2. Social Media Law in Vietnam Seen as Damaging to Online Debate

Vietnam's Ministry of Information earlier in May announced an
amendment to the Telecommunications Law that will require foreign and
local social media networks to confirm the identities of their users.
Those who refuse or fail to comply could find their accounts blocked.
Analysts say that this move by Vietnam is a way to curb one of the few
remaining spaces for criticism and independent journalism.

3. Article 19: Civil Society Must Play a Role in Digital Markets Act
Implementation in the EU

Article 19 and partner organizations sent a letter to the
Director-General of DG CNECT and the Director-General of DG COMP
urging them to maximize and clarify third parties’ ability to
contribute to the enforcement of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) in the
EU. Third parties – including civil society organizations, consumer
associations and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) – have a critical
role to play in ensuring the DMA is implemented and enforced
effectively. But they face significant asymmetries of information and
resources vis-à-vis large technology companies, the gatekeepers the
DMA is designed to regulate.
