Hello Digital Rights Defenders!
Here is your weekly update on digital rights around the world for the
week of January 9 - 13. As a reminder, you can submit your news for
the newsletter here:

### Digital Justice Corner ###
Digital justice, digital rights, internet freedom, we love using these
grandiose terms and keep forgetting about what is happening in our
immediate surroundings. If my work requires me to be connected ten
hours a day to my smartphone, am I exercising digital freedom?
One of the policies of our recent Digital Justice Every Day pamphlet
is The Right to Disconnect, which entitles you to have clearly defined
work hours. It also entitles you to unplug and not to have to look at
email or to have any work contact when those work hours are over. Many
companies have implemented this and it is even regulated in some
countries. The benefits of having significant amounts of off-screen
time are real and my invitation is for you to explore the
possibilities of a healthier digital lifestyle. As the Riseup
Collective friends like to say: “get off the internet, i’ll see you in
the streets”.
//The following corner is a recurring column written by Danae Tapia,
TCU Global Community Manager. More info here:

censorship in repressive environments - the countries, regions, or
areas worldwide where Internet freedom is most threatened.

to collaborate with civic tech innovators, conduct exploratory
research on topics related to using data and civic tech to improve
government services and strengthen their capacity in using equitable
data. The deadline for receiving applications is January 15, 2023.

### Digital Rights Resources ###
1. EFF: 2022 in Review
EFF pushed hard this year and won many hard-fought battles. And in the
battles not won, we continue on, because it’s important to stand up
for what’s right, even if the road is long and rocky. Check out EFF’s
year in review and the various articles about the organization’s
accomplishments.
https://www.eff.org/2022-year-in-review
2. The Evil LIst
Slate sent ballots to a wide range of journalists, scholars,
advocates, and others who have been thinking critically about
technology for years. Which tech companies are really doing the most
harm? Here are the 30 most dangerous, ranked by the people who know.
https://slate.com/technology/2020/01/evil-list-tech-companies-dangerous-amazon-facebook-google-palantir.html
3. Facial Recognitions' Alarming Pitfalls
The breakneck development and deployment of facial recognition
technology are outstripping efforts to corral alarming pitfalls. This
matters because police, retail stores, airports and sports arenas are
rapidly increasing biometric surveillance. But critics say the results
are too often blindly trusted, without enough double-checking of
matches.

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###
1. US Supremes Deny Pegasus Spyware Maker’s Immunity Claim
The US Supreme Court has quashed spyware maker NSO Group's argument
that it cannot be held legally responsible for using WhatsApp
technology to deploy its Pegasus snoop-ware on users' phones. Facebook
and its WhatsApp subsidiary sued the notorious Isreal-based software
company in 2019, alleging that NSO exploited a zero-day bug in
WhatsApp to remotely drop Pegasus on about 1,400 smartphones belonging
to attorneys, journalists, human rights activists, political
dissidents, diplomats and other senior foreign government officials in
multiple countries.
https://www.theregister.com/2023/01/09/supreme_court_pegasus_spyware/
2. How 3 African Activists Are Combating Internet Shutdowns
Authoritarian governments are increasingly turning to internet
shutdowns to silence dissidents and curb protests. Devex spoke to
three African activists about their experience and how they are
working to protect the human rights that depend on the internet.
https://devex.shorthandstories.com/how-3-african-activists-are-combating-internet-shutdowns/index.html
3. The Slow Death of Surveillance Capitalism Has Begun
Surveillance capitalism just got a kicking. In an ultimatum, the
European Union has demanded that Meta reform its approach to
personalized advertising—a seemingly unremarkable regulatory ruling
that could have profound consequences for a company that has grown
impressively rich by, as Mark Zuckerberg once put it, running ads. The
ruling, which comes with a €390 million ($414 million) fine attached,
is targeted specifically at Facebook and Instagram, but could be a
huge blow to Big Tech as a whole.
https://www.wired.co.uk/article/meta-surveillance-capitalism
4. WhatsApp Launches a Tool to Fight Internet Censorship
WhatsApp is expanding its anti-censorship measures by making it
possible for people facing censorship to use WhatsApp through proxy
connections, potentially allowing them to communicate when a country
has blocked the app.
https://www.wired.com/story/whatsapp-proxy-internet-censorship/
5. Oversight Board Overturns Meta's Original Decision in the “Iran
protest slogan” Case
The Oversight Board has overturned Meta’s original decision to remove
a Facebook post protesting the Iranian government, which contains the
slogan “marg bar... Khamenei.” This literally translates as “death to
Khamenei” but is often used as political rhetoric to mean “down with
Khamenei.”
The Board has made recommendations to better protect political speech
in critical situations, such as that in Iran, where historic,
widespread, protests are being violently suppressed. This includes
permitting the general use of “marg bar Khamenei” during protests in
Iran.
https://oversightboard.com/news/962043011444388-oversight-board-overturns-meta-s-original-decision-in-the-iran-protest-slogan-case/
6. Iran Says Face Recognition Will ID Women Breaking Hijab Laws
Iranian women are baring their heads to protest government controls. A
top official said algorithms can identify anyone flouting dress codes.
https://www.wired.com/story/iran-says-face-recognition-will-id-women-breaking-hijab-laws/
7. Filipino Activists Decry Facebook’s “Automated Censorship”
Several group pages and personal accounts of Filipino activists were
restricted by Facebook for allegedly violating community standards
after they posted photos, videos, and statements honoring the legacy
of the late founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines Jose
Maria Sison. Apparently, Sison is included in the list of Facebook’s
“dangerous individuals and organizations.” Facebook’s algorithm is
seemingly tweaked to automatically flag posts that mention Sison and
contain his images.
There have been successful appeals against this, but not all of them
were successful and activists continue to report restrictions imposed
on their accounts.
https://globalvoices.org/2023/01/05/filipino-activists-decry-facebooks-automated-censorship/
8. Human Rights Watch to the EU: Pass Directive to Protect Workers’ Rights
Human Rights Watch said that the European Union should pass
legislation that will bolster wage and labor protections for
ride-share drivers, delivery riders, and other people working for
digital labor platforms, today.
https://www.hrw.org/news/2023/01/09/eu-pass-directive-protect-workers-rights
9. Israeli Spy Tech Sold to Bangladesh
Despite a ban on intelligence and defense exports to Bangladesh,
Israeli companies have been selling hacking spyware to the government
in Dhaka. Passitora, a Cyprus-based company controlled by Israeli
businessman and former intelligence commander Tal Dilian, sold the
equipment to a branch of the Bangladeshi Interior Ministry last year.

10. Saudi Arabia’s Multiple Abuses: From Human Trafficking to
Government Agents Infiltrating Wikipedia and Sentencing Independent
Admins to Prison
According to SMEX and Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), the
Saudi Arabian government infiltrated Wikipedia by recruiting the
organization’s highest ranked administrators in the country to serve
as government agents to control information about the country and
prosecuting those who contributed critical information about political
detainees. Following an internal investigation in 2022, Wikimedia
terminated all of its administrators in Saudi Arabia in December. DAWN
and SMEX documented Wikimedia’s infiltration by the Saudi government
based on interviews with sources close to the company and the
imprisoned administrators.

A Times Investigation showed that on Haraj.sa, Saudi Arabia’s largest
online marketplace, hundreds of domestic workers are being illegally
trafficked and sold to the highest bidders.
