4. Conexo Publishes Practical Digital Security Resources

security materials. Topics include password managers, 2FA, secure
internet browsing, encrypted email, secure messaging, cloud
encryption, and disk encryption. The guides are available in Spanish

independent media. Conexo will work on keeping them updated.

5. EFF Publishes Investigation on Fog Data Science LLC, a Widely Used
Mass Surveillance Technology
EFF published their investigation based on public records acquired
from dozens of state and local law enforcement agencies and uncovered
a widely-used mass surveillance technology. Fog Data Science LLC, a
previously unknown company, provides law enforcement with easy and
often warrantless access to the precise and continuous geolocation of
hundreds of millions of unsuspecting users, collected through their
smartphone apps and then aggregated by shadowy data brokers.

6. Privacy International Releases Response to US Supreme Court’s
Attack on Repro Rights
Privacy International released an extensive response to the U.S.
Supreme Court’s attack on reproductive rights. Their reporting
describes how The Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health decision is an
outlier. It is contrary to the bulk of international jurisprudence and
human rights guarantees. As such, it undermines fundamental privacy
guarantees that women around the world should rightly enjoy.

7. Virtual Activism Releases a Statement at the Cybercrime Convention
Virtual Activism (VA) submitted a statement to the Third Session of
the Ad Hoc Committee to Elaborate a Comprehensive International
Convention on Countering the Use of Information and Communications
Technologies for Criminal Purposes - known as the 'cybercrime
convention'. VA urged the Committee to consider removing articles that
are too broad, to re-write those that are too vague, and to refer to
those principles that have been agreed upon in prior conventions and
declarations. In addition to the wording, the statement also focused
on whistleblower protection and intermediary liabilities.

8. Civil Society Organizations Warns the World Bank Against its ID4D Program
Access Now, Privacy International, NYU researchers, and other civil
society organizations wrote an open letter calling on the World Bank
to cease supporting unchecked digital ID systems that enable
surveillance, exclusion, and discrimination.
Through the institution's Identification for Development (ID4D)
Initiative, the World Bank helps establish new, or upgrade existing,
digital ID systems implemented by national governments. Often these
systems use digitized biometric data, rely on a centralized model —
risking data breaches — and consist of an ad-hoc bundling of public
and private services to keep the systems running. Often individual
rights and privacy are disregarded along the way.

9. EDRi Network Releases Position Paper on EU Law Amplifying Digital
Rights Risks
The EDRi network published its position paper on the proposed
Regulation on automated data exchange for police cooperation (“Prüm
II”). The European Commission’s Prüm II proposal fails to put in place
vital safeguards designed to protect users from state overreach and
authoritarian mass surveillance practices.

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###
1. Flooding in Pakistan Compounds Internet Access Woes
Pakistanis are no strangers to internet shutdowns, either for a
singular application or extending to entire networks, and the
temporary shutdown of YouTube on some networks was widely believed to
be a hamfisted attempt to censor livestreaming of former Prime
Minister Imran Khan’s speech. At the same time, as the country
grappled with the largest flooding in living memory, national internet
shutdowns were experienced as communications infrastructure broke
down, and flooded areas were completely cut off from communication
networks.

2. Taliban Continues Censorship as it Expands Network Coverage
While Afghans try to find Wi-Fi, the Taliban government is learning to
use the web like a blunt instrument. Activists and human rights
organizations say there continue to be targeted shutdowns to stifle
protest and restrict media reporting on violations in numerous
regions. The Taliban admits it blocked 23 million “immoral” websites.
The fear of surveillance or the ability of the Taliban to be able to
monitor browser history is also stunting freedom.

3. Cantonese: Stumping China’s Censorship?
Beijing’s sprawling internet censorship apparatus means that content
critical of the Chinese government rarely survives on the internet for
long. As a result, users have become adept at using code like
“Martian” language, emojis, and braille to evade censors. Sometimes,
even everyday language - and in this case Cantonese - is able to
confound online censorship mechanisms. It’s this ability of
“unofficial” lingua franca to cultivate a powerful and unique sense of
shared identity, distinct from and at odds with the state-sanctioned
national identity pushed by Beijing, that makes languages like
Cantonese potentially threatening to authoritarian governments.

4. UN | Human Rights Should be at the Heart of Tech Governance
In a panel discussion that looked at efficient ways of using new
technologies to overcome human rights challenges in the context of the
COVID-19 pandemic, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights
reiterated the need for governments’ duty to protect citizens against
abuse and misuse of digital technologies.

5. Egypt and Gulf Arab States Demand Netflix Remove 'Immoral Content'
Gulf Arab states have launched a coordinated campaign against
streaming giant Netflix, calling on it to remove "offensive" material
as they seek to regulate television content produced outside their
jurisdiction. Saudi Arabia issued a statement this week on behalf of
the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, saying the bloc has asked
Netflix to take down programming that violates Islamic values,
including some content directed at children. The United Arab Emirates,
which issued its own statement, said that Netflix violated local
regulations and "contradicts the country's societal value." Its media
watchdog would be monitoring Netflix's content "from now on" and will
take action if local laws are flouted. The statements did not specify
what content was causing offense but Saudi state-run Al Ekhbariya news
channel on Tuesday ran segments condemning the streaming service for
"promoting sexual deviance" to children, in an apparent reference to
homosexuality.
https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/07/media/netflix-gulf-warning-mime-intl/index.html
Egypt followed the day after, stating that Netflix’s content “is
anathema to their majority-Muslim societies”.
