### TCU Updates ###

Inaugural Digital Rights Job Fair: Looking for Orgs to Participate

This Spring Team CommUNITY will be hosting the first ever Digital
Rights Job Fair. We are currently looking for organizations that want
to be part of it. This is a great opportunity to get your name out
there, and meet amazing candidates from around the world.
If interested, please send an email to team at digitalrights.community.

### Digital Rights in the Community ###

1. Fireside Chat with the Open Tech Fund

On April 5, we will be hosting a fireside chat with the Open
Technology Fund, one of the largest funders in the digital rights
space. In this facilitated talk, OTF representatives will give an
update on their news and development, and new funding opportunities.
Most importantly, technologists, researchers, and trainers will have
the opportunity to provide feedback on what areas or challenges need
more attention; and what orgs, tech and projects are doing amazing
work and more.

2. Registration for Palestine Digital Activism Forum Open

You can now register for the Palestine Digital Activism Forum, which
will be held on May 17-19. The event provides a platform to discuss
the challenges that Palestinian civil society face to protect digital
rights and activists. It is also a space to exchange social media
experience and expertise to develop social media activism inside and
outside of Palestine, and confront serious threats faced by digital
activists.

3. Exploring the Carbon Costs of Pervasive Surveillance Practices of AdTech.

In 2021, the global ad spending across platforms reached $763.2
billion, and it is expected to rise 10% in 2022. The environmental and
energy costs of abusive online surveillance of AdTech is great. The
Carbolytics project identifies and analyzes the carbon emissions of
the total number of cookies belonging to the top 1 million websites.
The investigation identified more than 21 million cookies per single
visit to all these websites, which translates to 11,442 monthly metric
tonnes of CO2 emissions.

4. Digital Rights Group Continue to Sound the Alarm Around Iran’s
Draconian Internet Bill

ARTICLE 19, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and Access Now,
along with over 50 other organisations, are calling on Iranian
authorities and those engaged in bilateral dialogue with Iran to
pressure the Iranian parliament to rescind the ‘User Protection Bill’.
They state that the bill violates an array of human rights of people
in Iran, including the right to freedom of expression and right to
privacy.

5. Digital Rights Defenders Interviewed on Digital Authoritarianism

Check out a recent article in Deutsche Welle, where various digital
rights defenders were interviewed on the rise of digital
authoritarianism around the world. This is a great primer if you are
new to some of these issues.

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###

1. Google Employee Faces Retaliation For Objecting to Company’s
Israeli Military Contract to Open Data Centers

An employee at Google claims she is being pushed out of her job for
voicing criticism of Project Nimbus, a $1.2-billion contract Google
and Amazon Web Services entered into with the Israeli military and
government. The multi-year project would open data centers in Israel
and provide infrastructure for a full suite of cloud services to the
government and military. Many believe that the program would
facilitate surveillance of Paletsinians and the expansion of Israeli
settlements.

2. Philippines’s SIM Card Registration Act Undermines privacy, Online expression

In the Philippines, an act mandating the registration of SIM cards and
disclosure of personal information for social media accounts has
lapsed into law despite widespread opposition from rights groups and
privacy advocates. Introduced to “deter the proliferation of SIM card,
internet or electronic communication-aided crimes,” the measure poses
significant threats to privacy and free expression.

3. Ukraine ISP Experiences Cyber Attacks, Infrastructure Issues;
Russian Human Rights Groups & Indie Media Struggling After Losing
Internet Services, while Citizens become more Digitally Isolated.

Major Ukrainian internet service provider Triolan experienced cyber
attacks causing severe internet outages during the Russian invasion of
Ukraine. The ISP, which is among the top ten carriers globally,
reported a major outage coinciding with the start of the Russian
invasion on February 24 and again on March 9. Some internal devices
stopped functioning because attackers reset them to factory settings.
Additionally, efforts to restore service were hampered by the ongoing
Russian bombardment because some devices required physical access.

Meanwhile, Russians are becoming increasingly more isolated from the
global Internet. As more tech companies leave Russia, some experts
believe that it will be harder for citizens to maintain their online
privacy, and could speed up the transition to a fractured Internet
where online security and privacy is the sole province of democracies.

In addition, human rights groups and independent media lose services
after Namecheap, Slack, and Mailchimp drop Russian customers. One of
the groups affected provides educational projects for civil activists,
including teaching Russians how to use safe VPNs and the Tor browser
to escape Russian Internet controls. Many experts state that these
companies are inadvertently helping Putin by directly blocking civil
society groups, and ask tech companies to slow down, do due diligence,
and consult experts about how to enforce sanctions.

Human Rights Watch has also published an article examining what social
media and messaging companies have done during the Ukraine crisis, and
whether it meets their responsibility to respect human rights.
