### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###

1. Spanish Judge to Seek Testimony From NSO on Pegasus Spyware

Spain's National Court says that a Spanish judge will travel to Israel
to seek testimony from the head of tech company NSO regarding the use
of its Pegasus spyware in tapping politicians’ phones in Spain.

2. Online Platforms now Have an Hour to Remove “Terrorist Content” in the EU

Facebook, Google and Twitter now have an hour to take down flagged
terrorist content spreading on their platforms or risk fines of
billions of euros. Passed in 2021, the EU’s terrorist content
regulation enters into force this past week. It seeks to crack down on
terrorist propaganda on social media and viral livestreams of gruesome
attacks such as the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings. If tech
companies regularly fail to tackle terrorist content, they could face
a fine of up to 4 percent of their global revenue.

3. The US Supreme Court Is Building Its Own Surveillance State

Following the leak of a draft opinion striking down abortion rights,
the Supreme Court’s police force (the Marshal’s Office) launched an
unprecedented probe to uncover who leaked the decision. Already,
authorities have demanded phone records, signed affidavits, and law
clerks’ devices. The scrutiny is so intense that many onlookers have
suggested that clerks retain attorneys to protect their rights. While
it’s unclear how broad the cellphone searches are, or the exact
language of clerks’ affidavits, the intrusive probe reveals a
disturbing about-face from the Supreme Court, and particularly Chief
Justice John Roberts, on surveillance powers.

https://www.wired.com/story/the-supreme-court-is-building-its-own-surveillance-state/

In addition, If abortion is criminalized, tactics and tools already
used by law enforcement and immigration authorities could be adapted
to track anyone seeking or even considering an abortion, according to
advocates and academics who study the issue.

4. India is Considering a Panel to rule on Social Media Takedowns

India is considering whether to set up an appeals panel with the power
to reverse the content moderation decisions of social media firms, the
information technology ministry said, in what would be the first such
move of its kind worldwide. Digital rights activists warn the move
will increase direct gov’t control over social media platforms in
India.

5. Instagram Moderators say Iran Offered them Bribes to Remove Accounts

A Persian-language content moderator for Instagram and a former
content moderator have said Iranian intelligence officials offered
them money to remove Instagram accounts of journalists and activists.

6. Pinterest Banned Climate Change Disinformation

Pinterest is the first major social media platform to ban content that
denies climate change. The new rules apply to both posts and ads.
Since Pinterest's announcement, Twitter has prohibited ads that
contradict the scientific consensus on climate change and taken steps
to limit spam tweets. But there's much more to do. There are up to
1.36 million views of climate misinformation every day on Facebook,
according to one study.

7. Twitter Ordered to Hand Personal Information of Pro-Labor Account,
as Part of Defamation Suit

widely followed and anonymous pro-Labor account as part of a
defamation lawsuit brought on by far-right figure Avi Yemini.

8. Myanmar: UN Experts Condemn Military’s “Digital Dictatorship”

UN human rights experts have condemned the Myanmar military junta’s
attempts to establish a “digital dictatorship” in Myanmar by imposing
further restrictions on the access to the internet, internet
shutdowns, online censorship, surveillance and other barriers to
internet access. The experts urged UN Member States to condemn the
junta’s policies to curtail fundamental freedoms on and off-line, and
to adopt targeted sanctions against the military and military-linked
companies, including sanctions restricting the sale or supply of
dual-use surveillance technology. They also urged UN Member States and
international donors to support civil society initiatives to counter
censorship and surveillance in Myanmar.

9. Study Finds that Artificial intelligence to be UAE's top Sector
over Next Decade

Artificial intelligence is being tipped to be the UAE's most important
industry over the next 10 years, with universities urged to step up
efforts to prepare the next generation of high-tech workers. The
fast-rising sector was ranked ahead of construction, electronics,
aerospace, robotics, design engineering and IT and cybersecurity in a
poll of technology and engineering employees in the Emirates.
