### Digital Rights in the Community ###

1. Calyx Institute Releases UX Findings on Users Attitudes Towards
Digital Privacy & Security Released

Calyx Institute has just released the findings of their first ever
Digital Privacy and Security Survey, focused on collecting insight
about people’s attitudes toward digital privacy and security,
identifying their awareness of protection and protective behavior, and
exploring their knowledge and concerns about the topic. A total of
1146 individuals from different parts of the world participated in the
survey. Of the many findings, participants report that one of the
biggest challenges they face when securing devices is not knowing
which solution to choose, and that solutions are too complex to
understand, install, and maintain.

2. NSO Group Spyware Targeted Dozens of Reporters in El Salvador

A joint investigation by a consortium of digital rights organizations
has found that NSO Group's Pegasus spyware was used to target members
of the press and civil society in El Salvador. More than 35
Pegasus-infected individuals were identified. Twenty six of the
infected devices belonged to journalists connected to new sites El
Faro and Gato Encerrado, which have published reporting critical of El
Salvador's government and have faced various forms of retaliation as a
result of it.

3. New Research Looking at Laws Against Online Violence in Nepal

Body & Data has published research analyzing Nepal’s existing laws
surrounding online gender-based violence to assess their
effectiveness. The report found that Nepal’s policies have the
potential to curb digital rights, even though they are often made with
the expressed intent to safeguard those rights in the first place.

4. Report on Digital Rights Violations in Palestine Released

This January the Arab Center for the Advancement of Social Media
released their seventh annual report illuminating the digital rights
violations in Palestinians and pro-Palestinians advocates online. It
shows a continuation and escalation in Israeli violations of
Palestinian digital rights, pointing to a an increase in surveillance
technologies, such as facial-recognition cameras in public spaces.

5. HRW Publishes 2022 World Report

World Report 2022 is out. It is Human Rights Watch annual review of
human rights trends around the globe. The report states that
autocratic leaders faced significant backlash in 2021 and many
democratic leaders have been too mired in short-term preoccupations
and scoring political points to address serious problems such as
climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic. Sample of digital rights
violations reported on:

- Bahrain is requiring news and broadcasting sites to register and
obtain government approval, and have banned the publishing of content
that conflicts with “national interest”

- Iran’s parliament has been working on a draft bill that seeks to
impose further restrictions on internet access. It includes a
provision requiring international technology companies to have a legal
representative in the country to comply with Iranian law and
cooperate with authorities.I

 - Ethiopian passed a nationwide state of emergency November 4,
granting the government far-reaching powers that heighten the risks of
arbitrary arrest and detention against at-risk communities.

### Digital Rights Resources ###

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###

1. Twitter Agrees to Nigeria's Demands to End Seven-Month Ban

Nigeria is lifting its ban on Twitter after seven months of blocking.
This is after Twitter agreed to register in Nigeria and pay local
taxes. Nigeria suspended the social media firm last June after it
deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari.

2. Europol Ordered to Delete Vast Store of Personal Data

The EU data regulation watchdog, EDPS, has ordered Europol, EU’s
policy agency, to delete a huge store of personal data amassed
unlawfully. The data, which contains billions of points of
information, was gleaned from policy agencies in EU member states,
specifically crime reports, hacked encrypted phone services, and
sampled asylum seekers never involved in any crime. EDPS has given
Europol a year to review its databases and then remove any data that
cannot be linked to a criminal investigation. This is a major win for
policy advocates!

3. Surveillance Will Follow Us into ‘the Metaverse'

Digital rights advocacy group Electronic Frontier Foundation and the
Extended Reality Safety Initiative (XRSI), a nonprofit developing
standards and advising lawmakers on safety in virtual reality (VR),
have raised the alarm on the privacy threats Big Tech is posing with
its vision for a metaverse — not just for employees, but for people
and their children at home. Giant advertising companies are
positioning themselves as leaders in the VR market, like Facebook
parent company Meta. In this new scenario, our bodies are becoming the
new data source, giving companies and employers unprecedented access
to our brains and homes.

4. Europeans In Favor of Right to Use Digital Service Anonymously

Next week Europeans will vote on their final position on the Digital
Service Ac (DSA) , an amendment introducing a right to use digital
services anonymously. A YouGov opinion poll found that of 10,064 EU
citizens polled, 64% are in favor of such a right. The poll was
commissioned by Pirate Party MEP Dr. Patrick Bryer, and financed by
the Greens/European Free Alliance. If passed, DSA will allow Europe
to set global standards for digital rights.

5. In Kazakhstan's Internet Shutdown Affects Millions During Unrest

A state-imposed internet shutdown in Kazakhstan entered a sixth day on
Monday, leaving millions of people struggling to access basic services
and information about anti-government protests that have rocked the
country. The blackout served to obscure the situation on the ground,
with sparse reports and photos leaking through the barrier.

https://gizmodo.com/what-really-happened-during-kazakhstan-s-internet-black-1848315477

During the blackout, popular blogger, Kunekei Nurla, helped loved ones
stay connected because she was able to bypass the block because she
had a VPN on her phone.

https://www.euronews.com/2022/01/09/blogger-in-kazakhstan-helps-people-connect-after-authorities-cut-internet-access

Digital rights groups are urging Kazakh authorities to restore
connectivity after blackouts imposed during the country’s worst
violence in three decades.

6. In the Balkans, Political Crises and Deceptive Laws Incite Latest
Online Breaches

No-win political crises, online misogyny and misused legislative
initiatives were behind some of the worst end-of-year digital
violations in the region. Online attacks targeting women, independent
thinkers and critical voices continue to mar Serbia’s digital
environment. In Hungary, fake news about the pandemic and phishing
scams sent in the name of public institutions show no sign of decline.
Meanwhile a new bill posses risk to users’ digital rights in Romania.

7. ECHR Rules Bulgaria Surveillance Laws Violate Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Tuesday held Bulgaria’s laws
on secret surveillance, including retention and accessing of
communications data, violate the right to respect for private life and
correspondence under Article 8 of the European Human Rights
Convention. The court found that although covert surveillance is legal
in Bulgaria, there was a lack of proper judicial oversight over
decisions to issue warrants for surveillance and a lack of clear
regulation over the storage, access and destruction of secret
surveillance data. This allowed secret surveillance data to be used
for nefarious purposes.

8. Chinese Video Surveillance Giant Outfits Iranian Government

A new report from surveillance research group IPVM has found that
Tiandy, one of the largest globally in the video surveillance field,
has been selling video surveillance systems to the Iranian government.
Tiandy is not a state-run company, but it is one of the Chinese
Communist Party’s largest suppliers. Tiandy has reportedly signed a
five-year contract to furnish video surveillance technology to Iran
and plans to open an eight-person office in the country.
