### Digital Rights in the Community ###
1. Social Media Exchange (SMEX0 Releases A Comparative Analysis on
Data Protection In Saudi Arabia
The Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) is Saudi Arabia’s first
comprehensive data protection law with the aim to protect individual
privacy by regulating the collection, processing, disclosure, and
retention of personal data. The PDPL provides a detailed framework
including criteria for data processing, data subjects’ rights,
entities’ obligations when processing personal data, data sovereignty
and sanctions in case of non-compliance. The PDPL seems to be aligned
with international standards in certain areas, but some articles are
concerning and contain loopholes that could allow for violations of
the right to privacy and data protection.

2. What Real Accountability in the Humanitarian Sector Can Look Like
Humanitarian organizations are bound by a duty to do no harm; however,
sometimes in their bid to integrate data technologies into aid
provision, they might end up doing more harm than good.
Data breaches are one such instance. When these occur in the
humanitarian sector, very sensitive data can end up in the hands of
potentially harmful actors. While some humanitarian organizations
enjoy immunity from being held legally accountable, most do not; but
there is also no common understanding of ‘accountability’ for
accountability to be meaningful and actionable. Read on to explore new
ideas and tools to build responsible and equitable data practices.

3. Open Briefing Offering Responsive Assistance
Funded holistic security support from Open Briefing is available to
civil society organizations, informal groups, or individual civic
actors. This funding is especially designed for those at high risk of
attacks, harassment, or censorship, and who cannot otherwise fund or
secure funding for this type of support.

4. Paradigm Initiative (PIN) to Host Digital Rights Advocacy in 10
African Countries
>From February 15 to March 7, PIN will be hosting gatherings known as
‘digitalks” in 10 African countries, namely Cameroon, Malawi, Kenya,
Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Ghana,
Tanzania and Zambia. The talks will host open conversations on the
state of digital rights and inclusion; questions and answers; and
debates aimed at enhancing digital rights for all in the host
countries.

5. Iran Tightens Grip on Internet Freedom
Iran's parliament, known as the Majlis, has now said that it will send
the Protection Bill, known in Persian as the Tarh-e Sianat, to the
Guardian Council by February 20, paving the way for the imposition of
more restrictions than ever before on the internet in Iran.

### Digital Rights Resources ###
1. Blind In/On-Path Attacks and Applications to VPNs
Check out the following academic paper presented in USENIX21 Security
conference, analyzing two types of attacks focused on VPNs. One type
of attack can infer the existence of a VPN, and/or interfere or inject
data into the stream between the user and the VPN client. A second
attack completely removes the protection of a VPN by hijacking tunneld
DNS queries. This paper is highly technical, but important
considering VPNs are an increasingly important tool for millions of
users needing solutions to evade censorship or surveillance.

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###
1. EDPS Preliminary Remarks on Digital Spyware
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) has just released
remarks following the revelations about the Pegasus spyware.
Specifically, they are concerned about the impact of digital spyware
tools will have on fundamental rights, particularly on the rights to
privacy and data protection. This paper aims to contribute to the
ongoing assessment in the EU and globally of the unprecedented risks
posed by this type of surveillance technology.

2. Find out If You are Being Spied on by NYPD’s Surveillance Machine
The New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) surveillance machinery
disproportionally threatens the rights of non-white New Yorkers. The
expansive reach of facial recognition leaves entire neighbourhoods and
protest sites across the city exposed to surveillance via facial
recognition, supercharging existing racial discrimination. Between
2016 and 2019, the NYPD used facial recognition technology in 22,000
cases – half of which were in 2019. Despite mounting evidence that
facial recognition technology violates human rights, When Amnesty
International and others filed a Freedom of Information Law request,
the NYPD refused to provide information.
To help bring about a ban on police use of facial recognition
technology, Amnesty International has launched Decode Surveillance
NYC, which mobilizes thousands of digital volunteers to find and
categorize CCTV cameras throughout the city, and then work with data
scientists, geographers, and 3D modellers to analyze the crowdsourced
data.

3. US Tests Robot Dogs to Patrol its Border with Mexico
The US is testing robot dogs to patrol its border with Mexico in a bid
to increase the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) presence along its
southern frontier. The move has raised alarm bells among civil rights
groups and some US politicians.

### The Health & Wellbeing Corner ###
// This corner is authored by Selma Zaki, TCU’s Director of Community
Mental Health //
This week, I am spending time with my niece and nephew - ages 2 and 4
- and I am thinking about childhood and development. I am asking
myself: What does it look like to develop in a healthy and secure
environment? And what happens to us when we develop in unsafe
environments?
A lot of us have experienced unsafe childhoods and that could look
different for each person. Moreover, we sometimes struggle to
recognize whether our childhood experiences were harmful or not,
because these could be aligned with the cultural norms we were
surrounded by.
One way to understand the impact of our childhood on our adult lives
is to examine and observe our relationship with ourselves and with
others: How do we talk to ourselves when we’re hurting? Do we
recognize and validate our own needs or do we minimize them? Do we
allow ourselves to receive from others or do we often feel indebted
when we’re receiving?
Healing starts with understanding what it means to be a child. Below
is an infographic I saw on instagram from @sitwithsharon and despite
agreeing with the post, I noticed myself having a defensive reaction
to it. It can be difficult for us to accept that as children, our
boundaries were crossed. I wonder if it’s because playing the roles
mentioned below often served as a protective mechanism.
https://twitter.com/new_insights_tg/status/1468676541966176265/photo/1
I’ll leave you with a question: what love would you like to offer your
inner child this week?
And of course, music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sElWplDd7LU
