*** The Real Story Of the Afghan Biometric Databases Abandoned To the
Taliban ***

As the Taliban swept through Afghanistan in mid-August, declaring the
end of two decades of war, reports quickly circulated that they had
also captured US military biometric devices used to collect data such
as iris scans, fingerprints, and facial images. The machines, known as
HIIDE, could be used to help identify Afghans who had supported
coalition forces.

*** How Data Brokers Sell Access to the Backbone of the Internet ***

There's something of an open secret in the cybersecurity world:
internet service providers quietly give away detailed information
about which computer is communicating with another to private
businesses, which then sells access to that data to a range of third
parties, according to multiple sources in the threat intelligence
industry.

*** Preserve Evidence of Potential Rights Abuses in Afghanistan ***

Rights organizations Human Rights Watch, Access Now, Amnesty
International USA, and Mnemonic call social media platforms to
preserve and archive content that may provide evidence of past or
ongoing serious human rights abuses in Afghanistan and that could be
used for future efforts to provide justice and accountability, while
ensuring the privacy and security of vulnerable individuals associated
with that content.

*** Cuba: Telecommunications Decree Curtails Free Speech ***

On August 17, 2021, the government made public Decree-Law 35 and
several accompanying norms regulating the use of telecommunications,
including the internet and radio, and the government’s response to
“cybersecurity incidents.” The decree, which has the stated purpose of
“defending” the Cuban revolution, requires telecommunications
providers to interrupt, suspend, or terminate their services when a
user publishes information that is “fake” or affects “public morality”
and the “respect of public order.”

*** Russia Blocks Access To Six VPN Providers Ahead Of Elections ***

Russia's media watchdog has blocked six providers of virtual proxy
networks (VPNs), which people can use to circumvent government
restrictions on the Internet. The move, announced on September 3,
comes as Russian authorities tighten control of the Internet, blocking
access to dozens of websites ahead of parliamentary elections this
month.

*** From Pearl to Pegasus: Bahraini Government Hacks Activists with
NSO Group Zero-Click iPhone Exploits ***

In its latest investigation into the prevalence and impact of digital
espionage operations against civil society groups, Citizen Lab
identified nine Bahraini activists whose iPhones were successfully
hacked with NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware between June 2020 and February
2021. Some of the activists were hacked using two zero-click iMessage
exploits.

Disinformation is not a new phenomenon, but it has reached new
dimensions with the expansion in the use of digital technologies and,
in particular, social media. How do we address disinformation? There
is no universally agreed definition for this global, complex issue
that is increasingly difficult to approach. APC’s Disinformation

*** New Spanish Online Courses for Journalists ***

The Totem Project announced its partnership with the Consortium to
Support Independent Journalism in Latin America (CAPIR). In the frame
of this partnership, the Consortium CAPIR will publish a full
curricula of courses in Spanish on the Totem platform. Starting a
course on Risk Analysis called “Análisis de riesgo: Cómo ejercer el

*** India: Spyware Use Violates Supreme Court Privacy Ruling ***

Eleven digital rights and civil society groups call for independent
oversight of India’s state surveillance. This joint statement calls on
authorities to put in place broad reforms to establish proper judicial
and parliamentary oversight of government surveillance measures that
fully comply with international standards on privacy and other civil
liberties.

Signatures Demanding End to Phone Scanning Program ***

On Wednesday, September 8, at 9 am PT, internationally renowned
security technologist Bruce Schneier and EFF Policy Analyst Joe Mullin
will speak on a panel with digital rights activists delivering
petitions with more than 50,000 signatures calling on Apple to cancel
its iPhone surveillance software program. The briefing will be held

Time to come together around equity, healing and learning! We are
launching a Community Health Village whose theme will be Sustainable
Networks & Movements. Deadline for submissions will be September 9.
Specifically, we are looking for a diversity of proposals that explore
themes related to health and healing through a community lens. This
ranges from mental health to employee wellbeing to restorative
artistic practices.
