### Learning Resources ###
1. Do You Have Tor Training Materials?
Tor, one of the most trusted tools to circumvent censorship online, has an
amazing online center with numerous trainings in various languages.
However, did you know that you can also submit your Tor focused training
materials to the center, such as slides, guides, fanzines, videos, and
other formats? Check out this amazing resource to learn or teach your
community about digital security.

2. Understanding how People in Latin America use their Phones and Share
Information
OK Thanks has a phenomenal primer that features various “profiles” from
Latin America, designed to help us understand how people in the region use
technology.. They were created in partnership with the Guardian Project as
part of the Viento project and offer good insight into what technology
different groups of people can afford, and how that impacts how they share
and access information

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###
1. Internet Shutdown in Sudan Following Coup
Last week, members of the Sudanese armed forces shut down the country's
internet after announcing a coup. (As of writing this newsletter, the
Internet shutdown was still in effect). Telecommunications were also
affected, with citizens reporting difficulty making phone calls.

2. Cloudflare confirmed the shutdown, which was affecting both fixed and
mobile internet connectivity across the country.
https://radar.cloudflare.com/sd
In addition, Access Now has urged Sudanese authorities to immediately
restore full access to the internet and all communication services.

3. Internet Shutdowns are a Political Weapon. It's Time to Disarm
Authoritarian governments from 21 countries have deliberately shut down
internet service at least 50 times this year. As regimes such as Venezuela
face elections and Cuba experience protests, those in power there are
finding it easier to suppress dissent by curtailing digital freedoms — and
are becoming increasingly brazen in doing so.

Check out this Access report that is a useful tool to visualize shutdowns
globally

4. Yahoo Makes Final China Exit amid Tightened Regulation
Yahoo stopped all its remaining online services in mainland China this past
Monday, marking its final retreat from the country. “In recognition of the
increasingly challenging business and legal environment in China, Yahoo’s
suite of services will no longer be accessible from mainland China as of
November 1,” the company said on Tuesday.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/nov/02/yahoo-withdraws-from-china-as-beijings-grip-on-tech-firms-tightens
In addition, popular video game Fortnite, will exit on November 15, despite
the game having been launched in China in partnership with Tencent, China’s
largest gaming company.
5. Facebook will Shut Down Facial Recognition System
Facebook Inc announced on Tuesday it is shutting down its facial
recognition system, which automatically identifies users in photos and
videos, citing growing societal concerns about the use of such technology.
https://www.reuters.com/technology/facebook-will-shut-down-facial-recognition-system-2021-11-02/
Activists and civil society organizations have been calling for a ban on
these technologies for some time, so this is a great win for privacy
activists worldwide. This includes organizations like the Internet Freedom
Foundation, an independent organisation that advocates for digital privacy
and rights in India.

6. China’s Highest Profile #MeToo Accusation Shows the Limits of Blanket
Censorship
The world’s strongest censorship machine hasn’t been able to stop China’s
highest profile #MeToo allegation yet—aimed at a leader of the Communist
Party. Citizens accustomed to content disappearing without a trace
screenshot and circulated a message from China’s top tennis star, that
alleged sexual coercion against Zhang Gaoli, using coded language. Soon the
post was widely shared on English-language platforms, Twitter and the China
newsletter Sinocism, showing the limits of pervasive censorship and the
power of citizen action, solidarity and tenacity.
