*** Paradigm Initiative Released the Tanzania Digital Rights &
Inclusion 2020 Report ***

The report analyses the state of digital rights and inclusion in
Tanzania, examining violations and gaps, investigating the use and
application of policy and legislation, highlighting milestones and
proffering recommendations for the digital landscape in Tanzania. This
edition captures the digital divide worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic
and uneraths infractions on different thematic areas such as privacy,
access to information, and freedom of expression.

*** Hong Kong: Censorship in Radio Television Hong Kong ***

Since assuming office three months ago, Radio Television Hong Kong
(RTHK) Director of Broadcasting Patrick Li has already censored
hundreds of hours of content. Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is
urging the Hong Kong government to dismiss him at once and stop
interfering with the public broadcaster’s editorial independence.

*** Twitter vs India: The Battle of BJP and Congress Over a ‘Fake
Toolkit’ on COVID-19 ***

On May 24, police visited two offices of Twitter in Delhi and Gurgaon,
an action that escalated the feud between the government of India and
the social media giant over new IT rules announced last February. In a
statement to the Indian government on Thursday, May 27, Twitter
expressed concern about the “use of intimidation tactics by the
police” and “the potential threat to freedom of expression” for the
Indian users.

*** Google Buried Location Settings so People Wouldn't Disable Them ***

Google made location settings harder to find in its Android phone
software so people wouldn't turn them off, a move aimed at preserving
the data collection efforts that power the tech giant's lucrative ad
business, according to US court documents that were unsealed last
week.

*** Washington's Largest County Bans Government Use of Facial
Recognition Software ***

The most populous county in Washington state has become the first in
the nation to ban government use of facial recognition software. The
county is home to facial recognition software makers Amazon and
Microsoft. The American Civil Liberties Union is calling it a "huge
win" and "an important step forward in the effort to stop government
use of this harmful and racist technology."

*** Why Indian Courts Should Reject Traceability Obligations ***

End-to-end encryption is under attack in India. The Indian
government’s new and dangerous online intermediary rules forcing
messaging applications to track—and be able to identify—the originator
of any message, is due on May 25th. Three petitions have been filed
(Facebook; WhatsApp; Arimbrathodiyil) asking the Indian High Courts
(in Delhi and Kerala) to strike down these rules.

*** Mass Scale Manipulation of Twitter Trends Discovered ***

New EPFL research has found that almost half of local Twitter trending
topics in Turkey are fake, a scale of manipulation previously unheard
of. It also proves for the first time that many trends are created
solely by bots due to a vulnerability in Twitter’s Trends algorithm.

*** Big Tech Is Definitely Not Doing Enough When It Comes To Disability ***

Although the last few years have seen significant advances in
technology and innovation for disabled people, critics say the market
is undervalued. A growing scene of startup founders and innovators in
developing countries — from Ecuador to India — are coming up with
solutions that work. But for companies like Talov that have made an
impact in their customers’ lives, success, in the classic Silicon
Valley sense, remains elusive.

*** Europe to US: Pass New Laws if You Want a Data-transfer Deal ***

The United States must pass new legislation to limit how its national
security agencies access Europeans' data if Washington and Brussels
are to hammer out a new deal on transferring people's digital
information across the Atlantic, according to European Commission Vice
