*** Surveillance of Uyghurs Detailed in Chinese Police Database ***

Millions of leaked police files detail suffocating surveillance of China’s
Uyghur minority. Among the revelations from the database is information on
the extensive use of a tool that plugs into phones to download their
contents, the “anti-terrorism sword,” deployed so frequently that Chinese
authorities worried it was alienating the populace.

*** Internet Restrictions in Jammu & Kashmir Are Undermining the Supreme
Court's Orders ***

On Friday, January 22, the Jammu and Kashmir government issued yet another
order authorising the extension of a 4G ban. It has become a fortnightly
ritual in the former state where such orders are met with a mix of
indifference and exasperation.

*** Emotion Recognition Technology: A Threat to Free Speech, Equality and
Privacy ***

This week ARTICLE 19 published its report on emotion recognition
technologies in China and the impact they have on human rights, including
freedom of expression.Emotion recognition is a biometric technology that
purports to be able to analyse a person’s inner emotional state.

*** NEW: Mozilla’s 2020 Internet Health Report is Out  ***

Make sure to check out Mozilla’s Internet Health Report for 2020. For this
edition, over 100 people were interviewed on what can be done to make the
Internet healthier. In addition, they have three spotlight articles
exploring aspects of internet health, data and artificial intelligence
through the lenses of racial justice, data and labor in the gig economy,
and corporate and algorithmic transparency.

*** Get a Better Perspective on Encryption Laws and Policies with this
Interactive World Map ***

Depending on where you are in the world, the legal status of encryption
varies significantly. In some countries, the use of encryption-related
technologies is relatively unconstrained; in others, companies and users

*** Digital Defense Fund Toolkits ***

Digital Defense Fund has published three guides which include: Phishing:
The Most Common Attack, Account Security: Passwords & 2FA, and Online
Privacy: Controlling Your Data. DDF was established in 2017 in response to
the increased need for security and technology resources in the abortion
rights movement.

*** Access Now Creates a US Digital Rights Tracker  ***

Access Now has created a new online tracker that monitors tech policy in
the US in 2021, under the Biden Harris administration. The tracker is meant
to keep the administration accountable, and tracks seven major themes: data
protection, net neutrality, internet access, section 230, disinformation,
facial recognition, foreign policy.

*** Feedback Wanted for Community-Created Disinformation Guide ***

Blueprints for Change has published a draft guide exploring multiple ways
to deal with disinformation. The guide is being collaboratively created and
licensed under Creative Commons. Currently, they are seeking more tips and
ideas.

*** How to Start a Conversation About the Signal  with Your Family ***

Check out this amazing draft guide to help you have better conversations
with your family on why they should switch to Signal. The guide is a
community lead initiative, so feel free to leave comments or suggestions in
