*** Top Facebook Execs Silenced an Enemy of Turkey ***

As Turkey launched a military offensive against Kurdish minorities in
neighboring Syria in early 2018, the government demanded the social media
giant block Facebook posts from the People’s Protection Units, a mostly
Kurdish militia group the Turkish government had targeted.

*** Koo, India’s Alternative to Twitter, is Full of Hate ***

In early February, politicians from India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party
started signing up for a social network that almost nobody had heard of:
Koo. Embraced by India's right-wing government, Koo has given a platform to
anti-Muslim hostility.

*** The 2020 Ranking Digital Rights Index Is Officially Live ***

How did companies do in 2020 when it came to respecting users' freedom of
expression and privacy? Are they keeping up with their obligations? And if

*** Gender-based Violence Against Female Journalists: “Harassment Should
Never Be Part of the Job” ***

>From hateful comments on news websites to death threats on social media:
female journalists globally experience a range of online violence.
According to survey results from the International Federation of
Journalists (IFJ), two-thirds of female journalists have suffered
gender-based violence online. The abuse and harassment impact them both
psychologically and professionally.

*** Democracy Declining: Erosion of Media Freedom in Poland ***

According to a new report published by the Media Freedom Rapid Response
(MFRR), media freedom in Poland now faces its greatest set of challenges
since 2015. The government continues to wage a multi-pronged attack on
independent media to muzzle critical reporting and undermine watchdog
journalism.

*** The State of Digital Rights in Southeast Asia in 2020 ***

In this report, DigitalReach addresses the situation concerning digital
rights in Southeast Asia in 2020. In addition to exploring the regional
impact of technology on human rights, it highlights three main issues:
digital contact tracing related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Facebook
censorship, and disinformation and misinformation during the year.

*** Vietnamese Human Rights Defenders Targeted with Spyware Attacks ***

A new Amnesty International investigation has identified a campaign of
spyware attacks targeting Vietnamese human rights defenders (HRDs) from
February 2018 to November 2020. Amnesty International’s Security Lab
attributes these attacks to an attack group known as Ocean Lotus.

*** Cambodia’s National Internet Gateway Threatens Digital Rights ***

The Cambodian government enacted a decree establishing a national internet
gateway, paving the way for the creation of a China-style Great Firewall.
Implementing a centralized censorship and surveillance infrastructure of
this scale allows Prime Minister Hun Sen to tighten the noose on what
remains of internet freedom in Cambodia.

*** Stanford Researchers Identify Four Causes For ‘Zoom Fatigue’ and Their
Simple Fixes ***

Even as more people are logging onto popular video chat platforms to
connect with colleagues, family and friends during the COVID-19 pandemic,
Stanford researchers have a warning for you: those video calls are likely
tiring you out. It’s not just Zoom. Popular video chat platforms have
design flaws that exhaust the human mind and body. But there are easy ways
