### Digital Rights in the Community ####

1. Tor Blocked in Russia

Starting December 1st, Russian ISPs have started blocking access to
Tor. Roskomnadzor, the Russian government responsible for censorship,
also blocked torproject.org. Russia is the country with the second
largest number of Tor users, with more than 300,000 daily users or 15%
of all Tor users. As it seems this situation could quickly escalate to
a country-wide Tor block, the project needs your help. Find out how to
help:

Next week on December 15 @ 19:00 UTC, Tor will be hosting “Privacy is
a Human Right” online event, with founder of Pussy Riot, Nadya
Tolokonnika. The event will be hosted by Cindy Chohn, ED of the EFF,
and will also feature Ali Gharavia of Sida, and Nicholas Merrill,
founder & ED of the Calyx Institute.

### Digital Rights Resources ###

1. A Story of Period Trackers

Find out what it's like to use a period tracker, which individuals use
to track their menstruation cycle. Are users giving away a goldmine of
fertility and health information that can be used by big
pharmaceuticals and others to push medical services when women are at
their most vulnerable?

2. Measuring Internet Shutdowns

Launched in December 2020, the Pulse platform monitors shutdowns
around the world by consolidating trusted third-party internet
measurement data from various sources into a single platform. This
data helps examine Internet trends to better understand the health,
availability and evolution of the Internet.

3. Privacy is Global Podcast

This podcast explores what privacy means for people in different parts
of the world, and how new technologies and widespread data aggregation
impacts societies, politics and cultures. The latest episode,
available in English and Spanish, focuses on the grassroots work to
push for data protection in Bolivia.

### Digital Rights in the Wider World ###

1. Rohingya Sue Facebook over Myanmar genocide

Rohingya are taking legal action against Facebook for the way that the
platform contributed to the genocide of the Rohingya in Myanmar
including amplifying hate speech and the lack of moderation of posts
inciting violence.

2. Why Russia is Using Facebook to Launch Disinformation Campaigns in Sudan

Russia has also started to tap the power of social media platforms, to
influence and sway public opinion in Sudan through disinformation
campaigns, and to generally polish its image by highlighting
humanitarian activities in the country. In October 2019, Facebook
removed a coordinated network of accounts originating in Russia that
appeared to promote positive news about Russia to Sudanese users.
According to the report issued by Facebook, the content included posts
about local news and events in Sudan, including Sudanese-Russian
relations, Russian foreign policy, and Muslims in Russia. One of the
articles distributed on Facebook claimed that the U.S. and U.K. were
working on disinformation campaigns about Putin. Another article
questioned the veracity of a photo of the deposed president al-Bashir
behind bars.

3. Egyptian Rights Researcher Patrick Zaki Freed Pending Trial

An Egyptian court ordered the release pending trial of jailed
researcher Patrick George Zaki, a move welcomed by human rights
defenders and the prime minister of Italy where he had been studying.
Zaki was arrested on February 7, 2020 in Egypt for “spreading fake
news” in relation to an article he wrote about the plight of
Christians in Egypt, which make up about 10 percent of the country’s
population and have been targeted in the past. Zaki faces trial next
year.

4. Saudi Human Rights Activist Sues Spyware Maker DarkMatter

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has filed a lawsuit on behalf
of prominent Saudi human rights activist Loujain AlHathloul against
spying software maker DarkMatter Group and three of its former
executives for illegally hacking her iPhone to secretly track her
communications and whereabouts. The company was hired by the United
Arab Emirates to identify and monitor activists, journalists, rival
foreign leaders, and perceived political enemies, including Americans
residing in the US. AlHathlou is among the victims of the illegal
spying program run by the DarkMatter Group for her work advancing
women’s rights in Saudi Arabia. DarkMatter executives, Marc Baier,
Ryan Adamas and Daniel Gericke, who are former members of US
intelligence or military agencies, designed and operated the UAE cyber
surveillance program using malicious code purchased from a US company.
