*** Digital Rights Community Members Uncover Camps Where 1 Million
Muslim Minorities are Being Held ***

Allison Killing, Megha Rajagopalan and Christo Buschek have been working
for almost two years to locate the network of camps in Xinjiang, China,
where it is believed over a million Muslim minorities are being
detained. They have discovered that the Chinese government has been
building a series of much larger, more permanent and heavier security

*** Belarus Turned Off the Internet. Its Citizens Hot-Wired It ***

In early August, Belarus—sometimes called Europe’s last
dictatorship—went almost entirely offline for 72 hours. On Wednesday,
Aug. 26, for approximately one hour, Belarus shut down key parts of the
capital’s internet once again; allegedly, the order had come directly
from official state bodies.

*** Citizen Lab Report on Information Controls of Chinese Social Media
During COVID-19 ***

As a follow-up to their March 2020 report, Citizen Lab conducted daily
tests on WeChat and collected 2,174 censored keywords between January to
May 2020. This data provides a view into how narratives and messaging on
the pandemic are controlled and molded on social media in China.

*** Open Call for Papers for Topics on Internet Censorship and
Surveillance (TICS) 2020 Online Workshop***

TICS is a special track in the area of Internet censorship, surveillance
and other adversarial burdens to technology that bring in danger; to a
greater extent the safety (physical security and privacy) of its users.
Proposals for TICS 2020 should be situated within the field of Internet
censorship, network measurements, information controls, surveillance and
content moderation.
