Dear friends,
This newsletter is a service for the community of Internet Freedom
defenders around the world! Send us interesting updates, open positions,
events and resources and we will share it in our next newsletter.
Contact us at team at internetfreedomfestival.org.
Here are your updates for the week of January 28 to February 1:
*** The 2019 IFF is Now At Capacity! ***
You are amazing: Once again, it just took a few weeks before all IFF
tickets were sold out.
If you are still waiting to hear back from us regarding your ticket
request, we must share that it is very unlikely that you will be
receiving a ticket at this point (we wish we could you fit all of you in!).
Because this is the first year that we are implementing the IFF Ticket
system, we are asking all of you to check the status of your ticket
prior to booking your flight and accommodation.
To access the IFF you will need to provide your Ticket ID, found in the
IFF Ticket confirmation email, and on the IFF Ticket view on the IFF
Community Platform:

*** What’s Up With All the Animals? The Backstory of the IFF’s New, Wild
Image ***
“Every year the graphic image of the Internet Freedom Festival evolves.
2019 marks the 5th anniversary of the project, and we wanted to
celebrate all of you. We’ve created five symbolic representations with
unique characteristics to capture the importance of your work, your
values, and your strength as a group.”

*** Undercover Agents Target Citizen Lab Researchers ***
This past week an Associated Press report revealed that Citizen Lab
researchers were targeted by international undercover operatives who
were attempting to compromise the researchers work. In response,
Director of Citizen Lab has issued a response to the incident.

*** Block of Social Media in Venezuela ***
As many of you know, Venezuela has been in the news this week for
various reasons. We wanted to share some information coming out of the
IFF community regarding the situation. Net Blocks reported network
disruptions affecting multiple platforms on Tuesday, January 29 during
the live streaming of a politically significant session of the
Venezuelan National Assembly. Over the weekend they noted that regions
in the east and southwest were offline for over 28 hours.

In addition, former IFF Fellow Melanio Escobar from Redes Ayuda held a
press conference in Venezuela this week denouncing both the blocking of
social media and new portals.

*** OONI Probe mobile 2.0 is launched***
The Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) project has released a
new OONI Probe mobile app version. The new version includes improved
design and UX, a bird’s-eye view of all test results, and enhanced
website testing, among other things.
