Dear Friends,
We hope you’ve had a safe week filled with inspiration! Either way,
we’re sending you updates for the week of November 6-10 packaged with
good vibes:
### News and Updates ###
*** Call for Proposals Closed ***
We are filled with gratitude for the 600+ proposals that we received for
IFF 2018. Thank you for having shared the opportunity with your
community! You folks never fail to impress us with your expertise, the
sessions are spectacular. This is your festival, and we co-create it
with you.
Our amazing IFF Fellows are currently reviewing the submissions. We’ll
be letting everyone know the status of their proposals by early
December. Please remember that, due to our limited schedule and space,
we cannot accept everyone’s submissions.
*** Registration at Capacity! ***
It’s official–– we reached maximum capacity in only 4 weeks! This is a
first time for us, and we are completely humbled by the response. As
always, we are so grateful that you’ve dedicated your time and energy to
creating this community with us.
Two important notes regarding registration:
1) You can still sign up for our waitlist. We will be inviting new
registrations on a rolling basis.
2) Please let the IFF team know ASAP if you registered but cannot
attend. We have so many folks on our waitlist, and this will ensure that
they can attend. (Of course, we’ll miss you!)
***Help The Engine Room & OTF With a Survey***
The Engine Room is currently working on a research project for the Open
Tech Fund, looking into how the application data they hold can best
support the community’s needs. They’re looking to gain a better
understanding how individuals and organizations in the community would
like to engage with data from OTF’s application process.

*** Release of #Istanbul10 but Others Still Incarcerated ***
Amnesty International’s Taner Kılıç is still in detention. While the
#Istanbul10 have been released on bail, their triall continues. Sign
Amnesty’s petition demanding the charges be dropped.

***Newmark Foundation Grant To Enable Research By IWMF And TrollBusters
Online ***
The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) has just received a
grant from Craig Newmark Philanthropies to conduct research in the
United States on online harassment of women journalists. The research
will enable the community to better understand the breadth and depth of
how online trolling impacts female journalists – abuse that is almost
always violent or sexualized in nature when directed at women – and
aimed at silencing and censoring them.

### Ally’s Corner ###
***Series: How to Create Safe Spaces***
Recently, we were asked to share the strategies we use to make the IFF
spaces “safer.” As a result, we have launched a Safe Space weekly series
where we will be sharing some of the knowledge, strategies and tips we
have acquired in the last four years.

### Community Stories ###
***Journalists and Techies: An Important Alliance in Press Freedom,
Safety***
When journalists go missing — or worse, are murdered for investigating
and reporting on government corruption or drug cartels — their
investigative work and documents often disappear along with them. The
work for which the journalist risked their life or freedom ends. Efforts
are underway to ensure that an investigative journalist’s work continues
and is brought to light in the event a reporter’s life is tragically cut
short.

***Exciting Changes for Signal in the Near Future***
Users of Signal, the end-to-end encrypted communications app, may have
noticed some recent changes and upgrades. Signal recently added video
calling, encrypted profile capabilities, and read receipts. According to
Signal staff, these improvements are largely because of the generous
feedback of beta testers.
