Hi all

For those in the Northern hemisphere, I hope everyone is having a good
summer break without heatwaves, fires, flooding or other freak weather
conditions. For those in the Southern hemisphere, hope you are having a
good winter.

Just a short reminder, we will restart the environment reading group
with the book 'After Geoengineering: climate tragedy, repair, and
restoration introduction
<https://www.versobooks.com/books/3091-after-geoengineering>' by Holly
Jean Buck on September 5th. In the book the author writes about climate
engineering, to some a seductive idea to ensure that human species do
not hurtle towards its own extinction. The book will engage with
questions as 'can these technologies and practices be used to bring
carbon levels back down to pre-industrial levels? Are there
possibilities for massive intentional intervention in the climate that
are democratic, decentralised, or participatory?

Important details

  * Next session is on Tuesday September 12th 16:00 – 17:00 CET
  * Zoom link <https://uva-live.zoom.us/j/5689070082>
  * Find the schedule and more information here
    <https://www.criticalinfralab.net/2023/06/05/environment-reading-group/>

Scheduling: I would like to propose a change the our 'after the summer
break' reading groups dates. The issue is that some of us are also in
the infrastructure reading group and before our break we had the
environmental reading group one week and the infrastructure reading
group the other week. Now they are scheduled to happen in the same week.
Which is a bit intense. The after geoengineering is not a difficult book
to read, so I propose that after our first call we stick to our original
schedule which would be:

  * Sept 5th after geoengineering: climate tragedy, repair, and
    restoration introduction
  * Sept 12th after geoengineering: climate tragedy, repair, and
    restoration part i. cultivation (chapter 1 – 3)
  * Sept 26th after geoengineering: climate tragedy, repair, and
    restoration part ii. burial (chapter 4 – 5)
  * and so on

That means there we only have one week between the first two reading
group sessions. Are people ok with this? If yes, I'll change accordingly

Happy reading

Fieke
