Shaping Interfaces Between Science and the Public

Seed Grants for Shaping Interfaces Between Science and the Public: Call for Proposals
We now welcome proposals for innovative, interfaculty projects that strengthen the relationships between science and society through one or more “interfaces.”

We encourage projects to align with one or more of the themes of Shaping Interfaces, outlined here<https://cdn.uva.nl/1/5/1537/21/QUwQh5h2gvQn2b5jFMq0v3A9milgId_nJrkA9y28PR4N_4F8r0AtC6XBcPV2rFi2b4_xnUMITorBNZoau5X-32z6NmP18wMDY4PT2OitssY1XyLRTo-WKi6PekffBw9-R9LQA4EmsoQLD0Rj3yed2ARuLCozzo1IKmGldIY>. However, promising projects that are not directly tied to these themes will also be considered.

What is an interface?
Shaping Interfaces conceptualizes interfaces broadly as points of connection that facilitate interaction between science and society. Such interfaces can take many forms, including (but not limited to) apps, exhibitions, citizen science projects, co-creation events, games, chatbots, hubs, networks, and other spaces, tools, or platforms that enable societal and societal actors to learn from, dialogue with, or contribute to each other. The RPA supports interfaces that are guided by core principles of open science (integrity, transparency, rigour, responsibility, and inclusivity) to ensure they enable interactions that are safe, fair, and rewarding for all those involved.

Fundamentally, an interface is less defined by its format than by what it makes possible: fruitful, multi-way communication or interactions, co-creation, collaboration, and/or critique across science-society divides.

Shaping Interfaces x NEMO workshop
Rethink science communication as the design of experiences for the public. This hands-on workshop in the NEMO Science Museum offers new perspectives on designing public engagement activities with a focus on complex societal issues as the scientific subject matter.
Science communication has traditionally focused on explaining scientific findings to the public. But acquiring new insights is just one of many experiences that can spark people's interest in a topic. NEMO Science Museum has been developing a methodology for thinking about science communication as a broad range of experiences that can be designed. We based this so-called Taxonomy of Visitor Experiences on the six strands of learning, which is a synthesis of research on informal learning in the natural sciences. We have since translated this framework to other science domains (and even art), and it is now applied by NEMO in the development of most of its activities, exhibitions, school materials, and other public events.

During this workshop, we first provide an introduction to science learning in informal contexts. We discuss the shift from science communication to visitor (or public) experiences and introduce the Taxonomy of Visitor Experiences with examples also on the floor in NEMO. The largest part of the afternoon is dedicated to working in small groups on topics familiar to participants, designing a broad range of visitor experiences. The aim is to offer new perspectives on designing interfaces between science and the public.

Societal Challenges around Post-Quantum Cryptography - 19 October
The development of quantum technologies raises important questions ofpower, ethics and policy, particularly with regards to cryptography.Personal privacy and freedom, economic and social equality, warfare and geopolitics are all at stake. Post-quantum cryptography has been developed to address these vulnerabilities, but companies, governments and institutions are still in the process of making their IT systems quantum-safe. The so-called “Quantum Threat Timeline,” “Q-Day,” or the “Cryptography Apocalypse” are known by experts but not by the general public. Accordingly, our panel will discuss the social, political, and economic challenges surrounding (post-)quantum technologies.

The vulnerability of digital society is in part the result of our dependence on data encryption, and concerns privacy in online messaging, browsing, data storage, signatures and identity verification, hardware and critical infrastructures, financial transactions and public services. During this event, different experts will evaluate policy proposals and research centred on post-quantum cryptography for preserving privacy, fundamental rights, and the digital infrastructures on which society relies. They will examine questions of EU law and policy, sovereignty, and governance. Ultimately, the panel will explore the high-stakes struggle for security in the post-quantum era, in which national governments, big tech, and the military are contending to become quantum-ready before any abuse of power arises.

About the Speakers:

Paolo Cirio created the research project Post Quantum Cryptography Inquiry with over forty video interviews with experts conducted in collaboration with mathematicians Kilton Hopkins and Milanthi Sarukkali. He works at the intersection of art, technology, activism, and policy. Using journalistic, scientific, and artistic methods, he translates complex systems and hidden forms of power into artworks that invite public debate and collective agency. Cirio has exhibited in international museums and his actions have been covered by hundreds of media outlets.

Giada La Gala holds a PhD in quantum physics and a Master in Fine Arts, combining an interdisciplinary background to explore how transdisciplinary research and art-science collaborations can inform and enrich reflections on the societal dimension of emerging technologies. She serves as Science Communication Advisor for QuSoft and Project and Content Lead for Quantum Delta NL (QDNL), where she facilitates art-science collaborations centred on quantum technologies.

Matteo Fabbri (moderator) is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC), working on the Quantum Impact on Societal Security (QISS) project, and a fellow at the Institute for Information Law (IViR), both at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on platform regulation, the ethics of digital technologies, and cybersecurity policy. His interdisciplinary background spans philosophy, digital social science, EU law and human-computer interaction.

Last Monday, we gathered at the IAS to explore what it takes to build research infrastructure that enables communities to identify the questions that matter to them and contribute meaningfully to how research is designed and conducted.

We discussed questions around participation, research quality, ethics, governance and the role of platforms like TrialUs in creating more inclusive approaches to knowledge production.

After the seminar, we asked our speakers, Yoel Lubell and Sheila Varadan, three questions about the motivation behind their work, why community-led research matters beyond academia, and the change they hope to see.
