I’m also super excited!

First, I’ll be in Amsterdam from tomorrow and will see you all hopefully. Will check in tomorrow at 13h, come to the office directly. And then ZOMERBORREL.

I’ll be in Amsterdam by car so I can take four people (and one bike) from Amsterdam to Zeeland. I have to checkout Friday at 13 and would like to leave quite soon to avoid parking. I can pick you up at strategic places (perhaps not each one at home but we’ll find a way).

I will have my beach gear with me and can’t wait to go swimming. There’s a nice beach not too far from the house. And a good restaurant too. And perhaps we need to go shopping on the way?

While the PhDs are hard at work finalising their pilots, here go some info re our upcoming weekend outside Amsterdam.

[WHERE]
We will be heading to Colijnsplaat, a quaint village in Noord-Beveland, Zeeland ((=land of the sea).
We will be staying in Veldzicht (= view over the fields, see picture—horses most likely not there), a working farm that has belonged to the van der Weele family for generations. It is now a holiday home for the family, while some local cousins take care of the farming. It is relaxing by default, super silent, and 400 mt from the seaside.
The house has been largely left as if its last inhabitant, the mythological Tante Zus, was still around, plus a large kitchen and the bedrooms were built (or rebuilt) on the side. There are 4 rooms with two beds each, and two beds in the open space, so expect to share. Expect very steep stairs (almost ladders) to go upstairs.
There are some bikes but if everyone wants a bike we can rent some extra in the village.

[TIMING]
Note: due to academic commitments (PhD defence me, departmental summer event Joel), we are only able to arrive in Zeeland after 7pm. Please find yourself a nice restaurant, perhaps in Zierikzee? (see below), and maybe shop for the days together (info below). We can take one more person on our van (it only carries four).

[WEATHER]
It is expected to be the hottest weekend of the year in the NL, and this is both good and bad news. Good is because we are at the sea, we can swim, and there is always quite some nice breeze over there and 4-5 degrees less than in the city. Bad because we will be sleeping under the roof, in a house not designed for hot weather, but it is not hot yet so the house may still be fresh enough when we arrive.

[WHAT TO BRING AND NOT TO BRING]
In the house you will find bedding and towels, some basic soaps, etc.— so no need to bring those.

Bring your own beach towel if you like, clothing, slippers, whatever you may need for a countryside/beach location.

There are two bathrooms but only one shower, and one kitchen, which is then shared by all of us. For those with special dietary requirements: please inform the group of what we should do to make it safe and comfortable for everyone.
We will take turns at cooking etc, so make your proposals!

In the village, there is a small supermarket<https://www.spar.nl/winkels/spar-sturm-154/>, a cute bio shop (Biologische winkel De Kleine Deugniet, on Voorstraat 26), which opens only on Fridays and Saturdays, and a fish shop (John's Zeevishandel, on Visserijweg 4) also with erratic opening times.

[TO DO]
The Delta project<https://www.zeeland.com/en/visit/things-to-do/sights/delta-works/the-delta-works-of-zeeland> is nearby and deserves a visit. We are close to the Oosterschelde storm surge barrier.
Notable villages nearby: Zierikzee<https://www.zeeland.com/en/visit/islands/schouwen-duiveland/towns-and-cities/zierikzee> (across the Zealand drug), Veere<https://www.zeeland.com/en/visit/islands/walcheren/towns-and-villages/veere> and Middelburg<https://www.zeeland.com/en/visit/islands/walcheren/towns-and-villages/middelburg>, linked to the colonial history of the country.
Surprisingly there is much to do: walking in the dunes, by the beach, swimming (only possible with rising tide<https://tidecheck.com/tides/colijnsplaat/15-day>) cycling (our fav), fishing oysters at low tide, watching the sunset… visiting the Neeltje Jans<https://www.neeltjejans.nl/> park, or the improbable replica of a roman temple dedicated to Nehalennia<https://www.nehalenniatempel.nl/>, the goddess of sea, death and rebirth, or going on a boat trip to spot seals—we won’t have much time to work! There are even some interesting museums (including the National Flood Museum<https://www.zeeland.com/en/visit/things-to-do/art-and-culture/museums>).
