[DATAGOV Core] Invitation to Amsterdam!

Hi,

sorry, and thanks for the feedback.

Yes, I agree it would be great! Sure if you want to ask your colleagues in Brussels, great! Especially if they are used to working with arts-academia entanglements. Maybe they know of funding calls or foundations.

I am pretty sure that Impakt would be a wonderful opportunity. I havent been to their expo yet, but the topics are quite aligned, I think it would be amazing if you wanted to get in touch. To help you, here is a description of Martin's work:

Martín Tironi is Associate Professor and Director of the School of Design at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and Director of the Millennium Nucleus FAIR. His research examines the social, ecological, and political implications of digital technologies—especially AI—through design anthropology and research‑creation. He has led multiple Fondecyt projects on datafication, smart cities, and climate‑oriented digital technologies, and his curatorial work includes the award‑winning Tectonic Resonance and installations on AI’s terrestrial footprint. He is also the creator, alongside Manuela Garretón, of the installation Hybrid Ecologies: Visualizing the Terrestrial Footprint of Artificial Intelligence, and of the upcoming exhibition: the Terrestrial condition of AI — tracing the material, ecological, and geopolitical infrastructures that sustain contemporary AI systems. Professor Tironi is inaugurating a new exhibition this summer, focusing on rare earths and AI. The exhibition aims to activate what he calls the terrestrial condition of AI — tracing the material, ecological, and geopolitical infrastructures that sustain contemporary AI systems.

Thanks!

Best,
G

Hi,

It would be great if this could work out somehow.
Shall I ask my contacts and colleagues in Brussels if they have an idea? I don’t know if anything would come up and I don’t think there’s budget but I could check it out with them.

I also know the people behind https://impakt.nl/ in Utrecht. Again, no idea if this works for them on short notice but if you think this could be interesting for Martin, I don’t mind sending an email.

Best,
Jonas

Hello team,

I am forwarding you this email from Martin. He will be in Europe between July and December and would be excited to do something with us.

I think the idea of bringing an exhibition here is way too ambitious (it is a lot of money and work, which I think are better employed for a DATAGOV-lead artistic project, where we work with artists to make art based on our work).

It could still be nice to organize a talk with him, maybe with the IAS since they have these lines of inquiry (infrastructures, art and science, environmental impact of AI...). I would try to organize something for mid/late september. This is when I am sure I will be here.

If you have any suggestion, idea, or proposal, please let me know! Especially if you can think of some activity that would be better for DATAGOV (Idk, a masterclass like Diletta?).

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

All best,
Giulia

Dear Giulia,

I'm excited to share that my stay in Berlin from July to December has been confirmed!

I'm thrilled about the possibility of collaborating on an activity within the framework of the DATAGOV project. I have two ideas in mind:

The more ambitious option would be to bring a version of the exhibition that just opened on rare earth minerals and AI. Alternatively, we could organize a presentation exploring the intersection of research-creation around the materialities of AI.

Un abrazo

Hola Martin,

Thank you for your email and understanding.

September or October is definitely possible. I am going to get in touch with the IAS director, to whom I had already pitched a half idea of this conversation, and I will let you know what she says and when the location would be available.

Feel free to decide the format you prefer, as long as we keep the connection with Data Infrastructures and Arts Meets Science.

Thank you again for the interest in coming to share your work with us in Amsterdam. I really look forward to it.

Also, I am curious, where is your exhibition on rare earths and AI taking place?

Best,
Giulia

Hola Giulia,

Thank you so much for your message, and no worries at all, I completely understand how these things can take time.

I’ll be moving to Berlin in late July and staying until December, so there will be a good window to organize something together. Perhaps we could aim for September or October, but I’m of course flexible depending on what works best for you and the team.

A Master Class or presentation at IAS sounds excellent. The connection with Data Infrastructures and Arts Meets Science fits perfectly with my current work. We could also start thinking about possible topics ... For example, I could present my current work on AI and rare earths, which will be part of an exhibition in June, or more broadly address data infrastructures, environmental sensing, and the socio-ecological implications of AI.

Thank you also for the update on the Advisory Board summary. I look forward to reading it.

Looking forward to planning something together.

Warm regards,
Martin

Dear Martin,

Thank you for your email. I hope you are well.

I am really sorry for the long times that we have taken to organize this event, and that the delay on our part has made it impossible for you to come on June 4th. It is a pity indeed! My sincere apologies.

But, I totally understand and I am really glad to know that we will have another chance soon. It is great to hear that you will be in Europe for six months. This gives us plenty of time to organize an event. Do you already know when you will be moving to Berlin for the visiting exactly?

Maybe we could think of a Master Class or a presentation at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), <https://ias.uva.nl/> which would be very interested due to their line of interest in Data Infrastructures and also in Arts Meets Science. And of course in collaboration with DATAGOV!

Finally, I wanted to share that our Kick-Off summary for the Advisory Board is almost ready, sorry for the long wait! We will send it to the Board soon.

Thank you again for your patience and collaboration.

I look forward to meeting you and organizing something together.

Best regards,
Giulia

Hi Giulia,

I hope you are very well.

I’m writing to let you know that I have finally booked my flights: I will be in London from June 5th to 13th. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to stop by Amsterdam this time, as I needed to book the tickets before prices increased further.

The good news I wanted to share with you is that I will be doing a six-month sabbatical in Berlin.

Since I will be based in Europe during the second half of the year, this could be a great opportunity to organize something together—a seminar, a presentation, or any activity that makes the most sense to you.

All the best,

 many thanks again for everything.

Dear Giulia

I wanted to ask, only if it is at all possible, whether there might be any chance of holding the event on June 4th instead of June 3rd. The reason is simply that if I need to depart on the 2nd, the overall trip would become quite long for me (from June 1st to 12th), and I suspect my family might not be very pleased with that.

Of course, I completely understand if June 3rd is the only feasible option, and I would be very happy to adapt accordingly.

All the best,

I’m very happy to hear that the event is getting closer to confirmation, and I truly hope it can happen.

Regarding the travel arrangements, I will purchase my international flights from Chile, arriving either in Amsterdam or London, depending on the best option available. Then I will purchase the internal tickets separately in order to travel onwards to Edinburgh.

Thank you again, and I look forward to hearing good news soon.

Best wishes,

Dear Martin,

Sorry for my late response. I was waiting for news from the GDC office.

Unfortunately, I still do not have a definitive yes from the funding organization. However, we have been moving things and we are very close to receiving their final confirmation to have the event on June 3rd, 2026.

As I am drafting the prospect budget, I am accounting on our budget your stay for two nights, June 2nd to 4th, at Volks Hotel, a wonderful hotel where we always accommodate our guests. For the travel, I temporarily put the following flights: London - Amsterdam, and Amsterdam - Edinburgh, but it would be great to know more about your plans so that we can accommodate you at best.

I will keep you updated with the status of our funding application, and let you know as soon as we have their green light. If that is okay with you, we would ask you to buy your transportation tickets and send us the invoice for reimbursement.

Thank you for your patience, and sorry again for the delay!

I look forward to making this event happen!

Best,
Giulia
