Hi all,

We received an improved version of Yelyzaveta’s blogpost yesterday. I spent some time improving it.

Especially Giulia and Stefania, can you check my rework? It’s not perfect but I am not sure it’s worth spending more time on it.

I left track changes for now, in case you want to see what I changed. Feel free to ignore and focus on my version (see screenshot below). It’s here (Nexcloud>Kickoff>Documentation>Blog Post) https://uva.works.surf.nl/index.php/f/3504764

Hi Yelyzaveta,

Thank you so much for putting this together. We know it's no small task to distil so much information into a short blog post, especially without having all insights to the project.

That said, we feel the current draft would benefit from more depth, and some stronger connections to the broader project are missing. Day 2 in particular feels too thin. Did you already have access to the notes and transcriptions from that day (attached)? There is a lot, but it should help to fill it out. We've also added a few comments directly in the text that we hope will be useful (attached).

Would it be possible for you to revise the post by Tuesday morning? We want to publish next week.

We completely understand if the timeline is tight. If a revision isn't feasible by then, we will rework the blogpost ourselves and publish. But we wanted to give you the opportunity first.

Thanks again for your effort on this.

Best,
Jonas

Dear Giulia and Jonas,

Sorry for the wait. Please find attached the blog post in HTML format.

I tried to follow the look of the website as closely as possible. I also embedded the images directly in the HTML, so the file should not depend on external links or email display issues.

Please let me know what you think. I would be happy to make any changes.

Best,
Yelyzaveta

Hi Jonas,

Thanks, that’s really helpful! I think it’s quite straightforward, so no need for a call from my end. I’ll share a draft with you once it’s ready, should be done by next Wednesday.

Best,
Yelyzaveta

To build further on Giulia’s email and structure And Stefania’s very helpful blogpost cheatsheet. Let me know if you want to call later today.

  1.
Narrative intro: a concrete, relatable scene from the event that creates a sense of urgency; something that lands even for a reader who has never heard of DATAGOV
  2.
The problem and the provocation: what is at stake: who governs whom through data infrastructure, and why that question is urgent now; end with a provocative statement or question that carries the reader forward
  3.
Day 1: Behind closed doors the invite-only workshop: who was in the room and why that mix mattered; what the four tech families (biometrics, digital ID, health technology, education) revealed about unresolved tensions; keep descriptive detail minimal — only what serves the argument
  4.
Day 2: Taking it public the shift to open panel debates; how the project's three core concerns (citizenship, sovereignty, inequality) played out in front of a broader audience; 1-2 concrete moments or exchanges that illustrate the stakes
  5.
What this opens up: not conclusions but directions: what the two days produced as questions, doubts, or hypotheses for DATAGOV going forward
  6.
Punchy close: brief; if it does not land, cut it short per the professor's advice
  7.
Pictures: embedded throughout rather than grouped at the end, ideally

Note: resist the urge to report. Every paragraph should be argumentative. Ask yourself after each one: so what? Also, the transition from Day 1 to Day 2 is your narrative spine: use it.

Hi Yelyzaveta,

Sorry for not writing earlier. I took some days off last week.
Did Giulia already send you a structure? I can also have a quick call this afternoon to get things going.

If Giulia hasn’t sent a structure yet, I’ll do so in a few hours.

Thanks and sorry again.

Jonas

Hi Jonas,

Thank you for following up! Sounds like a great plan. I am happy to work on the blog post and looking forward to getting started. I have a deadline coming up, so I will have more time from next week onwards. Please send over the structure whenever you are ready!

Best,

Hi Yelyzaveta,

Hope you had a good rest after the active week with our kick off. Also, from me, many thanks for all the work and commitment. We really appreciated your input.

I am following up with you, for now, regarding your Tutorial. As a first step, Giulia, Stefania and I would suggest to work on a blog post for the event. I would support you in that.

The post (max 1000 words) should tell a good story about the two days without going too much into detail with any one topic, creating a good overview and links to the DATAGOV project. This will not only give you some convenient visibility on our website and social media, it will also be a great way of gathering an in-depth overview of the project and the topics discussed during the two. Working on the Ukrainian digital ID, as you suggested, would indeed be a fascinating follow-up work for that work on the blog post, which can then be discussed with Stefania (and me, if useful) in detail.

I hope that suits your interests and goals.

Do you have some time in the coming week(s) to work on this? I would provide you with a general structure for the narrative, which you can then fill in with content from your notes as well as all other documentation of the event.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

Best regards,
Jonas

Dear Yelyzaveta,

Thank you so much for your email, and forgive me for the delay.

I am impressed that you found the time (and energy) to revise your notes so quickly. We really appreciated that.

We started talking about your tutorial today in a group meeting, and later today you'll receive news from Stefi or Jonas about possible next steps for the tutorial. We can also see when we can organize a meeting to discuss this in more detail.

Meanwhile, I wanted to express my gratitude for your work once again, not only the notes but also the pictures. Please, find here a selection of your pictures (to which I did a little bit editing, I hope you don't mind): Yelyzaveta<https://amsuni-my.sharepoint.com/:f:/g/personal/j_a_breuer_uva_nl/IgC83ELr0SwoR5ufWqMX20t9AVew1hiPJFxMZBhap5W90WY?e=vI7IjL>

Warmest,

Hi Giulia,

Hope you are doing well and managed to get some rest over the weekend!

I spent some time transforming my handwritten notes into a more coherent piece. I was a little worried at first, but I think they turned out quite well. Please find them attached!

I would love to find a moment to chat with you and Stefania about the next steps for fulfilling the tutorial requirements. The topics discussed were genuinely fascinating, and I have quite a few directions I could take it. One idea I had: there is a digital ID/digital government system in Ukraine called Diia<https://diia.gov.ua/> (Дія), which would connect really nicely to a lot of what was discussed at the kick-off. But there are other angles too. I think we just need to align on what is feasible and what would be most useful for us

Let me know when you and Stefania are in the office, ideally next week, so we can find a moment to discuss!

Best,
Yelyzaveta
