Dear all,

I agree with Stefania that we should include in the save the date email the following (instead of the form from the get go):

“If you would like to stay informed about the kickoff event and other DATAGOV projects, please subscribe to our mailing list”

In the new year, I will (try to) update the website to include a section for blogs and a place to sign up to the mailing list.

p.s. I’m not working late into the night — I’m a bit jet lagged and woke up at 5am with a restless brain!

Hey, I finally read this from beginning to end. Thank you Jonas!
I made some minor adjustments—adding industry and policymakers as attendees, the grant number, edutech (we will see later), removing my name (I want the project to speak for itself, and the project is much more than me).

Alternatively to the form, IF the purpose is to elicit interest, we can ask people to subscribe to community at data…. We won’t be able to involve everyone to the IAS/closed workshop, so

As for the dates: 25-26 or 26-27, correct? I would like to wait until IAS confirms what’s best for them, and we find a location for the rest of the events.

Re IAS: pics of the Sweelinck room can be found here<https://ias.uva.nl/about-the-ias/contact/contact.html>. It isn’t huge, so we could a) either invite guest speaker by area (EU, Brasil, India, SA) or by tech family. Thoughts? Preferences?

Re: farm. Let me confirm with my lovely partner because he has to be with us for us to enjoy it, and I will get back to you with some potential dates—and we have to hope some work for all, and then the farm is actually free on those days…

Save the date — DATAGOV project kickoff (25–27 March 2025, Amsterdam)

Exciting news! Please mark your calendars for the DATAGOV Project Kickoff, taking place 25–27 March 2025 in Amsterdam, hosted by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and partner venues.

DATAGOV investigates regulatory data infrastructures: data-grabbing systems that actively shape the polity, from monitoring and automated decision-making to mediating access to public services, rights, and welfare. The project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC, grant No. 101142006), takes a comparative approach investigating the European Union, Brazil, India, and South Africa, to examine how these infrastructures transform governance and what they mean for the future of democracy in an era of pervasive datafication. To start with, our empirical focus is on four technology families: biometrics, digital identity, and health and education technologies, and how these reconfigure citizenship, sovereignty, and inequality.

While the programme is still taking shape, you can expect an engaging mix of public and invite-only sessions spread across two days and evenings. The kickoff will feature workshops, keynotes, performances, shared dinners, and a party, bringing together a diverse group of participants from academia, policymaking, industry, civil society, and the arts. The event will also leave ample time for conversation, (net)working, and enjoying each other’s company.

Thanks Jonas for working on this! I really like the updated text and invite. I agree with Meg, the form is a great idea.

I have only worked with Google Forms before, but I’m happy to help with that if CryptPad doesn’t work out.

Also, @Stefania Milan, the farm sounds so lovely! :D
Would you be available for a brief call when you have time to discuss the tentative agenda? It wouldn’t be shared with the save-the-date emails, but I think reviewing the final list of invitees and speakers will give us a clearer sense of how to organise the events around themes and groups. What do you think?

Instead of having people respond to the email, maybe we can create a form to collect emails + ask people if they intend on joining (also ask whether TBD).

I wanted to create a form on cryptpad but they seem to be down… I cannot access at the moment.

Please save the date for the DATAGOV project kickoff on 25–27 March 2025 in Amsterdam (University of Amsterdam (UvA) and more).

DATAGOV is funded by the ERC and Stefania Milan of the University of Amsterdam is the PI.

The project explores regulatory data infrastructures: infrastructures that actively shape the polity, from monitoring and automated decision-making to mediating access to public services, rights, and welfare. Through a comparative lens across the EU, Brazil, India, and South Africa, the project unmasks the impact of regulatory data infrastructure on governance and charts the future of democracy amidst pervasive datafication. To start with, our empirical focus is on three technology families: biometrics, digital identity, and health technologies, and how these reconfigure citizenship, sovereignty, and inequality.

We are still shaping the programme, but you can expect an engaging and diverse mix of closed and public activities two days and evenings.

Expect a blend of workshops, keynotes, and performances, dinner and a party, with a diverse range of speakers and pariticipants from academia, civil society, art and more. Not overpacked, with plenty of time for conversation, (net)working and enjoying.
