Hello Everyone:
Greetings from Ithaca, New York! It's been a while since I wrote to this
group, but I wanted to reach out because I am co-organizing, along with my
Data & Society colleagues Jacob Metcalf and Meg Young, an open panel
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/1HGDBHZ7uQLsu4h8nCeUDC7FJ5PZQXYcmUTsrNU_FhUk/edit?usp=sharing>
titled *“Impact Engagements: Mapping the Uneven Consequences of AI with
Impacted Communities”* as part of the *4S Conference* in Seattle, taking
place on *September 3–6, 2025*.
This panel examines the uneven distribution of AI harms and invites
critical contributions addressing two central debates in organizing impact
engagements:
1. *What is “impact”?* How do we evaluate and articulate the potential
consequences of algorithmic systems?
2. *Who should be involved in “engagements”?* How can we better center
the autonomy, power, and agency of impacted communities in uncovering and
addressing algorithmic harms?
We welcome papers that critically examine these questions, focusing on the
lived experiences, histories, and politics underlying how we understand,
measure, and regulate the impact and harms of algorithmic systems.
*Paper Submission Deadline:* January 31, 2025
If you're thinking about attending the conference, please consider our
panel for your submission and feel free to reach out to me with any
questions about the panel. I am looking forward to receiving your
submissions and a generative panel discussion. :D
Cheers,
