Dear all,
I hope you are well, and safe in these very difficult times. With some of us I am in close contact, and I know you are doing well - for everyone whom I haven’t seen in a long time, this is my message sending solidarity, and hoping that things get better soon.
In continuing the conversation started by Stefania and Emiliano on the impacts of COVID-19 across the Global South and its intersections with datafication, I have shared some ideas on the Datactive blog - https://data-activism.net/2020/04/bigdatasur-beyond-touchscreens-the-perils-of-biometric-social-welfare-in-lockdown/ - regarding the perils of perpetuating mandatory biometric access to social welfare schemes during lockdown. While this is mainly India-based, the problem is ubiquitous in countries subordinating social protection to biometric ID, and am hoping we can discuss the implications of such problem (and ideas to overcome it) in greater detail.
Sending solidarity from England, all best wishes,
Silvia
