Hi!
>Nevertheless, somehow people seemed to get a lot out of the 2 hour workshop.Lots of positive feedback and enthusiasm about the tool, and some good vibes from people who started from "I have no experience with this and have no idea what I'm doing on installation" and got to "The notebook is running but giving me an error in cell 7 because one of the mailing lists I tried to analyze had funky data".
This is great to know! Fantastic!
In my experience as a student who approached Bigbang as a Python beginner, the best way to go around the Windows vs. Unix problem without a virtual machine is to use Colab. Of course, it would be great to have a more structured Windows documentation, but since you're already developing some Colab work, I believe that's the way to go. Just my two cents though 🙂
Unfortunately I can't be at the meeting tomorrow. I have another meeting overlapping.
See you soon,
Riccardo

I've done the tutorial.
It turns out roughly 75% of business school scholars use Windows!!!
It was the blind leading the blind for an hour.
It would be better if we had more complete Windows documentation, or an accessible containerized or web version.
Nevertheless, somehow people seemed to get a lot out of the 2 hour workshop.
Lots of positive feedback and enthusiasm about the tool, and some good vibes from people who started from "I have no experience with this and have no idea what I'm doing on installation" and got to "The notebook is running but giving me an error in cell 7 because one of the mailing lists I tried to analyze had funky data".
This was the notebook I used for the tutorial, which seemed to work as an introduction to the software and its functionality:

Hi there,
just a quick followup on my previous email - hope the info was useful. This is a link to the Oracle VirtualBox with instructions, in case the students need it: https://www.oracle.com/it/virtualization/technologies/vm/downloads/virtualbox-downloads.html?source=:ow:o:p:nav:mmddyyVirtualBoxHero_it&intcmp=:ow:o:p:nav:mmddyyVirtualBoxHero_it
And here are the instructions to download Ubuntu and install it on VirtualBox: https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/how-to-run-ubuntu-desktop-on-a-virtual-machine-using-virtualbox#1-overview
I don't know if they are beginners or not. When I started this was all new to me (including the use of a virtual machine), so I'm sending pieces of info that may be redundant. From our previous conversations I understand they are more well-versed than I was, but I don't want to take things for granted.
Happy to meet them and see if I can help, if you think it's useful. Let me know!
Best,
Riccardo

Hi!
Yes! I created a virtual box on my local computer with Oracle VirtualBox and installed Ubuntu there. Then used Bigbang as per instructions on github.
Alternatively, I use Google Colab (the simple way without Google Cloud). This option is less feasible though.
Unfortunately, now I'm not at home, I'm emailing from my phone. I'll reply in more detail in the next few days - sorry for the quick and undetailed response. But feel free to put me in touch with them if I can be helpful.
Best,
Riccardo

Subject: [Bigbang-dev] Windows installation
Hello,
I'm starting to get some feedback from the CLBE participants.
Two emails from Windows users requesting help with the installation.
Any ideas about how to help Windows folks? I can't replicate their situation locally.
Cheers,
Seb
