Hi all,
I hope email finds you all very well. I am sending you this email to see whether there is interest in setting up an IRTF Research Group focusing on Research and Analysis of Standards Processes (RASP).
In case you are not very familiar, the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) focuses on longer-term research issues related to the Internet while the parallel organization, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), focuses on the shorter-term issues of engineering and standards-making.
If there are sufficient people interested, we can discuss the vision, work plan, and a proposed charter of the research group among ourselves. In the past, this could lead to a proposed Research Group, doing the work of organizing sessions during the IETF (three times per year) (but could also be two) with speakers, research, and discussions. If all works well we could then possibly become an established Research Group (per the judgment and discretion of the IRTF chair).
I think it is interesting to do this work close to the 'object of research'. In part because this helps us have a real interdisciplinary discussion that would probably not work if we would do it at a conference of one particular academic discipline. Furthermore, the research ideally would also benefit the practice of standard setting. I also hope this will further the collaborations between different groups of practitioners and scholars.
If you are interested in this, just reply to me (a 'yes' if sufficient, but research topics and ideas are also very welcome) and then after a couple of weeks, I will send an email with everyone who signed up in cc to discuss the work plan and draft charter.
Best,
Niels
PS Feel free to disseminate this email among interested colleagues.
