It's for studying tendencies over time in discrete-valued time series
(such as number of e-mails in time slots, counting series, or
categorical/ordinal data, such a relative frequency of e-mails on a list
over time, or e-mails that may be categorised as mentioning privacy or
not mentioning privacy).
Apparently it's a new research field, like about 25 years old. It's not
included in most standard courses on time series analysis I've been told.
