Dear all,
today, in the afternoon, there are two interesting events (in Rome):
~14:30 - 15:00 (UTC+1) ""The Internet of Tomorrow Must Sleep More and
Grow Old" https://ripe87.ripe.net/programme/meeting-plan/plenary/#mon1
& @ 18:00 - 19:00 "Sustainable Networking: Where are we and where should
we go?" https://ripe87.ripe.net/programme/meeting-plan/bof/
Some of us will meet in a "Local Hub" in Rotterdam :
https://bpn.servus.at/ripe87/
You can register to ask question online:

Or you can just watch as livestream on YouTube:

Talk: Monday, 27 November ~14:30 - 15:00 (UTC+1)

Today, the ICT industry has a massive carbon footprint (a few percent of
worldwide emissions) and one of the fastest growth rates. The Internet
accounts for a large part of that footprint while being also energy
inefficient, i.e., the total energy cost per byte transmitted is very
high. Thankfully, there are many ways to improve the current status; we
discuss two relatively unexplored directions in this paper.
Putting network devices to “sleep,” i.e., turning them off, is known to
be an efficient vector to save energy; we argue that harvesting this
potential requires new routing protocols, better suited to devices
switching on/off often, and revising the corresponding hardware/software
co-design. Moreover, we can reduce the embodied carbon footprint by
using networking hardware longer, and we argue that this could even be
beneficial for reliability! We sketch our first ideas in these
directions and outline practical challenges that we (as a community)
need to address to make the Internet more sustainable.
BoF: Monday, 27 November 18:00 - 19:00 (UTC+1)

Everybody is concerned with sustainability today, and rightfully so. In
academia, there is a renewed momentum building for sustainable
networking questions. But are we tackling the correct problems?
Researchers often have biased, outdated, or simply wrong mental models
of how today's networks (really) operate and the problems they face. In
this BoF, I would like to gather first-hand experience from
practitioners and operators working "on the ground."
- Is sustainability a topic for ISPs today?
- What initiatives/efforts have already been taken?
- What issues or questions related to sustainability are left open?
- How can academics best help practitioners make their networks more
sustainable?
Conversely, academics are often limited by the lack of information that
is easily accessible to practitioners. This BoF may be the opportunity
to establish data-sharing collaborations between active forces in
industry and academia.
