This is the call for the summer symposium, "What a waste: surplus art,
theory and tékhnē", which will be the first summer session of our three
year symposium series called:
"Cybioses – life in the future imperfect"
You can find a longer description of our symposium series and the
abstract submission at the link below. It also includes all the details
and background information:
https://www.nsuweb.org/study-circles/circle-2-cybioses-life-in-the-future-imperfect/
The symposium is part of the Nordic Summer University (NSU), which
organizes Nordic networks for interdisciplinary study and research,
pioneering topics like technology, environmentalism, feminism within its
tradition (see www.nsuweb.org). During the summer symposium there are
many different symposia that are held at the same location, where all
participants stay during its entire duration (see the link above for
more information and the costs).
Date & Place of the Symposium: July 27th– August 3th, 2023, Palanga
Lithuania
We invite scholars, artists, students, technologists, theorists and
other professionals working or writing on topics related to "waste" to
submit. Are approaches to "waste" as a meaningful intellectual category.
Accordingly, the title "What a waste", begs the question of how to act
with a less obvious lack of care and to act with purpose, which also
extends to (our own) intellectual concerns and related practices. Which
ones should have value, which should not? How do we decide what about
art, theory and tékhnē are a waste, and what not?
We welcome experimental approaches to presenting and collaborating and
we hope this topic will deepen and re-new our collaboration, with
previous and new participants. Feel free to contact us if you are
wondering how you would fit in.
Please send your abstracts with a short motivation letter and bio to us
by the 12th of May to eric.deibel at nsuweb.org. And, please, help us
spread the word.
We look forward to your submissions and ask questions if you have them,
Eric Deibel, (Assistant Professor/Lecturer, Bilkent University STS program),
also on behalf of:
Palle Dahlstedt (Professor of Interaction Design, University of
Gothenburg / Chalmers) and
Maru Mushtrieva (Researcher and text- and sound-artist with a background
in literature and based between Berlin and Brussels.)

Subject: Vacancies for 4 PhDs and 1 Postdoc on community economy,
sustainability, resilience
From: Tine De Moor <demoor at rsm.nl>
Dear colleague,
Do you know of master-students and/or PhDs who are (nearly) finished and
want to continue in Academia? We are looking for four PhD-students and
one postdoc on the community economy for sustainability and resilience
to complete our team (see information below). Deadline for all
applications is 15th of May 2023. The envisioned starting date is
September 2023. Many thanks for sharing these vacancies widely! If you
wish to be updated on future vacancies (more to come this fall), do let
us know via this email-address.
Many thanks!
Dr. Thomas Bauwens & Prof. Dr. Tine De Moor

Building the Community Economy for Sustainability and Resilience
Are you passionate about building sustainable futures for the planet and
humanity, and about understanding the roles communities can play in the
process? Do you want to be a part of cutting-edge research projects that
address the ways communities and citizens can expand their impact to
accelerate societal transformations towards sustainability? Then these
exciting research opportunities are for you!
Across the world, new bottom-up and self-governing enterprises are
increasingly being set up by citizens and local communities in the
fields of sustainable energy, the circular economy, shared mobility,
food, care, and many others. Citizens hereby collectively govern and use
resources as commons, through self-governance, according to the rules
they decide upon as a group. How can such community and citizen-based
enterprises scale their impact and transform society beyond markets and
states? This is a critical and timely challenge, as scholars and
policymakers have high expectations on the roles of communities and
citizens to advance sustainability and resilience. Community and
citizen-based enterprises are widely known to foster collective action
locally. But what are the mechanisms through which they can achieve
wider transformations to tackle urgent sustainability challenges such as
climate change? What is the role of group size and heterogeneity for the
resilience of – both historical and present-day – organisations and of
society as a whole? These PhD and postdoc positions offer unique
opportunities to delve into these fascinating topics and work together
with other team members with expertise from various disciplines.
PhD 1: Scaling community enterprises for sustainability:
understanding challenges and solutions to organizational tensions
PhD 2: Scaling community enterprises for sustainability:
understanding the drivers and challenges for resource mobilization
strategies
PhD 3: Scaling community enterprises for sustainability:
understanding the roles of social networks
PhD 4: Institutions for collective action: link between size,
heterogeneity, resilience
Postdoc: Scaling the Societal Impact of Community Enterprises for
Sustainability: an Analysis of the success factors of community
enterprises’ scaling strategies
Through these positions, the researchers will get the opportunity to
work on key sustainability fields, including sustainable energy, the
circular economy, the sharing economy, and natural resource management.
The PhDs get a full-time salaried employment (not in the form of a
scholarship) for 4 years without teaching obligations, with the option
of a conditional 5th year. There are however opportunities to be
involved in teaching. All positions are embedded within a group of
researchers focussing on the Community Economy and Institutions for
Collective Action at the Business-Society-Management department of RSM,
where sustainability is central to all research and cooperation with
other disciplines is key (see
https://collective-action.info/_ctc_main/_tea_main/ for an overview of
the group at the moment). They are part of different sub-projects:
PhD 1, PhD 2, PhD 3 and the Postdoc-position are part of the new
ERC Starting Grant project SCENSUS, led by Dr. Thomas Bauwens. SCENSUS
stands for “Scaling the Societal Impact of Community Enterprises for
Sustainability”). Click here for further information about the project
or contact bauwens at rsm.nl for further information.
PhD4 is part of the NWO-VICI-project UNICA, led by Prof. Tine De
Moor. UNICA stands for “Building a UNified theory for the development
and resilience of Institutions for Collective Action for Europe in the
past millennium”. Click here for further information about the project
or contact collective-action at rsm.nl for further information.
Please note that there will be more vacancies -for postdocs and
tenure-track positions- coming up soon. If you would like to stay
up-to-date on these vacancies, send a mail to collective-action at rsm.nl.
Thanks for sharing!

We are excited to invite you to the
OpenForum Academy Symposium 2023
The CfP is now open until 29 May
Hosted by TU Berlin, the OpenForum Academy Symposium will, on 28
November 2023, bring together researchers and practitioners from all
walks of the Open Source research ecosystem at an interdisciplinary
conference.
Submit a proposal, register to attend and save the date
Website and CfP

As of today there is no academic conference covering questions relating
to the social, political and economic impact of Open Source. This
hampers the linking of research agendas, growth of the research area,
and the societal understanding of the value of the Open Source ecosystem
as a whole. The OpenForum Academy Symposium (OFA) fills this space.
After a successful first, virtual edition in 2021, the OFA Symposium
2023 will bring together an interdisciplinary set of researchers,
practitioners, and policymakers from around the world to Berlin, in
order to explore the transformative power of Open Source Software and
Hardware.
At the OFA Symposium, we will examine the social, political, and
economic implications of open source. We will explore how open source is
changing the way we work, communicate, and interact with each other, and
how it is shaping the future of technology and society.
The Symposium will feature a diverse and group of speakers and
participants, including researchers, policymakers, developers, and
activists. We believe that the OFA Symposium will provide a unique and
valuable opportunity for learning, collaboration, and networking.
We hope you will join us for this exciting event, and look forward to
exploring the social, political, and economic impact of Open Source
together.
