<div dir="ltr"><font face="georgia, serif" color="#000000">Hello everyone!</font><div><font face="georgia, serif" color="#000000"><br></font></div><div><font face="georgia, serif" color="#000000">So below is a brief report of our event in Abuja, Nigeria.</font></div><div><span id="gmail-docs-internal-guid-26b2b32f-7fff-160b-e67e-9e52e7631676"><font face="georgia, serif" color="#000000"><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:12pt"><span style="background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-variant-numeric:normal;font-variant-east-asian:normal;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">Date of event: Thursday, 19th September 2019</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:12pt"><span style="background-color:transparent;font-weight:700;font-variant-numeric:normal;font-variant-east-asian:normal;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">Event Manager: TechHer NG</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:12pt"><span style="background-color:transparent;font-variant-numeric:normal;font-variant-east-asian:normal;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">The first edition of Coffee & Circumvention which was held at the Aiivon Hub, Wuse 2, Abuja, had 20 people in attendance. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:12pt"><span style="background-color:transparent;font-variant-numeric:normal;font-variant-east-asian:normal;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">The event commenced at 5:15 pm and was hosted by Techher’s Myima Agu and Soniya Dawarga. After welcoming guests, brief introductions and stating of the objectives of the meet up by the TechHer team, the lead speaker for the event, Mr Boye Adegoke from Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, gave a few insights and answered quite a few questions on the theme of the meeting - Basics of Digital Security. Mr Adegoke spoke on a number of critical issues around digital security including ways we unwittingly endanger ourselves online, how we can protect ourselves and what steps the government and citizens need to take to ensure the protection of our online rights, privacy and data.</span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:12pt"><span style="background-color:transparent;font-variant-numeric:normal;font-variant-east-asian:normal;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">Mr Adegoke’s session was followed by a lively, enlightening discussion on a range of issues from </span><span style="background-color:transparent;font-variant-numeric:normal;font-variant-east-asian:normal;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">the balance between convenience, security and regulation when making payments online to the ways negligence and carelessness are the major reasons why people fall victim to online fraud and scams and how to prevent those. We also briefly touched on the role of the government in securing the data of citizens, making reference to the Data and Privacy Bill which Mr President declined assent to last year. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:12pt"><span style="background-color:transparent;font-variant-numeric:normal;font-variant-east-asian:normal;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">Lara Raji of ClueNG briefly discussed with the participants on the need for safety regulations and settings for minors using the internet. </span></p><p dir="ltr" style="line-height:1.38;text-align:justify;margin-top:12pt;margin-bottom:12pt"><span style="background-color:transparent;font-variant-numeric:normal;font-variant-east-asian:normal;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap">Chioma Agwuegbo rounded up the meet up with a thank you to attendees and extend an invitation for collaborations on</span><span style="background-color:transparent;font-variant-numeric:normal;font-variant-east-asian:normal;vertical-align:baseline;white-space:pre-wrap"> themes, hosting and speakers for subsequent eC&C meetings. We think this happened because we didn't have an agenda with specific topics to cover.</div><div><br></div><div>Apart from getting to know each other and the projects we work on, we also did a brainstorming activity to understand the topics that people in the room would like to see covered in the future, and we got leads on some really interesting speakers that we could get in the future. For NYC, we had a few snafus, but overall it went super well. We had a<br>
really good turnout. Just to give you an idea of how diverse it was, we<br>
had reps from a grassroot group that does alot of work around<br>
homelessness, wikipedians, digital security trainers, activists from<br>
Asia and Latin America, aclu folks, lawyers working on freedom of<br>
speech, and so much more.<br>

One Lesson Learned:<br>
We forgot to leave time for networking/socializing, which by far has<br>
been super powerful in the past. Future formats will probably look more<br>
like this: 20 minutes presentations, leave 20 minutes for Q&A, and then<br>
the rest of the time to connect people together!<br>
<br>
ONE WIN:<br>
We also had three bilingual IT people approach us about learning how to<br>
give basic digital security workshops so they can volunteer to help<br>
folks locally. (Spanish, Arabic) In addition, two old school community<br>
folks have agreed to have them as aides for a workshop, to help onboard<br>
them.<br>
